I don't remember seeing a thread about this yet. I picked up an Xbox Series X yesterday as I preferred the Xbox ecosystem a bit more than Sony in the last generation, but am also wanting to get a PS5 (if anyone ever gets any more stock) as Sony generally have the better exclusive games.

But, exclusive games aside, what are peoples preferences between the two - and why?

I chose a PS5 largely because of my PS4 games collection, but I was also informed by some of my favourite games being PlayStation exclusives (Uncharted and The Last of Us series).

On paper the Series X is the more powerful machine. But where I think the PS5 has the edge over the Series X is the new DualSense controller. In particular the adaptive triggers are awesome, and can add some extra immersion when gaming.

For instance, in Borderlands 3 when firing large caliber weapons there seems to be some real weight to the action, as the trigger will stop half way down and require additional pressure to complete.

It's one of those things that's kind of hard to describe in a way that does it justice, but once you experience it you'll love it.  And the bundled game (Astro's Playroom) does an excellent job of introducing you to the controllers new features. It's also a pretty fun platformer in its own right.

I'll be ordering the PS5 when stock arrives. Better exclusives, better system and the controller as mentioned above. I have a regular gaming friend group of around 40 friends scattered around NZ and Australia and only 1 plays Xbox, says it all really especially considering the PS5 is outselling Xbox X/S 2 to 1.

Definitely Xbox for me,

Vastly prefer the controller and the interface.

Gamepass and play anywhere games (play on both Xbox and PC) are a game changer for me.

None of the Sony exclusives really float my boat other than Gran Turismo and Uncharted.

I'll pick up a PS5 at some point when stock is available mainly to play GT, but my PS4 sat basically unused for about 2 years so I am in no real hurry.

They are both immensely capable machines, you really can't go wrong with either. If you have the disposable cash and time to play both, better still.

Me, I've been in the PlayStation camp from the very beginning. PS2 being the only generation that I missed when I crossed over to try the original Xbox back in the early 2000's. I promptly returned to the PS3 for the next generation.

For this generation I never even considered the Series X. With backwards compatibility and such a large catalogue of games from my PS4/PS4 Pro time it was always going to be PS5 for me.

When you look at the jump between last gen and this gen, the only revolutionary change introduced was the dual sense controller. Yes, the superfast SSDs and immense graphical power is a big leap over last gen but both camps have delivered that so its not a decision driver for me. However the dual sense controller really is a game changer and I find it difficult to go back to the dual shock with the PS4 Pro

I went with PS5 as I focussed on the 4 last gen and have a large library of digital games. Dual sense and more appealing exclusives sealed the deal.

I have a decent gaming PC which covers me for GamePass, so I just don't need an XBox, though it seems like a great unit from a technical perspective.

Yeah, will be getting both but just wondering what the "go to" one should be. Last gen I got pretty much everything on Xbox and just used the PS4 for exclusive titles. I've tended to prefer the Xbox controller in the past as the Dual Shock always felt a bit small. I've generally found the rumbling and vibrations of the controllers distracting and pointless, but maybe that will change after trying the new Dual Sense.

When you think about how much a decent gaming PC costs, and how much a new release games cost, the cost of getting both consoles doesn't seem as bad.

I went xbox because from the PS4 sony was getting really difficult to integrate with universal harmony remotes.
Xbox was more of an entertainment hub for movies etc.

Nowadays my TV itself does most of that and I don't recall when I last used a physical disc for movies etc.

Now the big loss for my family (2 younger girls, now older) was the lack of a singstar microphone singing game in xbox land.

I see Sony have dropped support for this in their world also, so now noone is doing that money making stream of party karaoke anymore.

That would clearly sway the decision for most between ecosystems I'm sure 🤣

It’s purely preference at that point. Playstation leads because of the studios that release exclusives. Technical specs simply point at them both being practically identical now that they’re running AMD Zen and RDNA2.

To make up for it Xbox have been pushing game pass out to capture not just traditional xbox customers but some of the PC market they left behind in the old days. You’ll see it recommended to just get the pass if you already have a good enough PC as the xbox doesn’t offer much more. Crossplay with xbox live and windows 10 is a side benefit if your mates are on xbox as it works quite well.

The controllers are hit and miss, purely preference. They’re not that much different in size and you can always get third-party variants offering the other style or even adapters to plug in original controller to the other platform. Dualsense gives some more features now with feedback in the buttons and integration in some games.

Theres a few tiny details that may swing in favour (eg. 1440p support, better download speeds etc.) but you’d get whichever one you want games for. At this point that’ll be the PS5 for most coverage, Xbox if you REALLY want MS first titles like Halo. Otherwise PC players keep trucking on with game pass and waiting a year or two down the line when Sony exclusives maybe comes out on PC (Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh etc.).

I'm considering a series X, Partly because I prefer the offset Analogue sticks but mainly because I've got 3 years of gamepass stacked up and want to use it. I only got a Xbox one digital late in it's life because I saw how cheap you could get gamepass by upgrading Xbox live and saw one cheap so figured overall o could just stop buying games and I'd save. And that is pretty much what has happened so I've got no regrets.

I was considering a series s but I just can't get on board with 512Gb storage on any console, I get why they did it but it's just not enough and upgrading it for $400 means you may as well buy the X in the first place if you can. My main reason to upgrade is k just want the faster load time, and $800 is a lot of cash to save a minute or so here and there. I'm mostly playing indie stuff at the moment anyway so not like the load times are too long on those anyway tlmsee.micj improvement.

I've got both (day one each :).   I've always been an xbox person, but have always had both.

This time around the dual sense really does feel like a game changer - feels awesome on COD (don't judge me).

But Cyberpunk - only on a xbox.

At the moment I'm spending most of my time on the PS5 - very different from previous gens when I almost never turned on the Playstation except for exclusives like Singstar :)

Also - gamepass is brilliant.

If I could choose only one - probably xbox.  But why choose?

Whilst 8K is a future standard, it takes something quite grunty to output 4k at high frame rates.

The older Xbox One S model will output 4k bluray and video streamed content, but not games.
It just upscales the Full HD games to output at 4k, and it can do HDR.

Of the newer consoles, the more expensive Xbox Series X device can do 4k for everything, and can stream video content to output at 8k.

The cheaper X box Series S can stream 4k content from youtube/netflix etc but gaming wise plays at 1440 (midway between 1080 and 4k) and upscales that to output 4k.

Not sure on sony land devices sorry.

It really depends what you define as “4k capable”.

If you go by purist definition and ask “Are these consoles capable of playing (AAA) games at native 4k resolution?” Then the answer is no, the hardware simply is not powerful enough.

But if you’re asking if they can output in 4k/8k then yes, they can do 4k/8k playback. Video streaming , blue ray etc. will playback correctly. Games will however not be native 4k, instead will upscale from a lower internal render resolution depending on performance targets.

For the most part it’s good enough that the answer is given in most marketing that “yes it can”.

PS5 because I'm already entrenched in the Sony ecosystem due to having a PS3 and PS4. If I didn't have a PC, the Xbox would be a more enticing prospect.
