Hey all.
Here's the situatuon: Today I got a nice new(ish) PS3 from TradeMe. It's an original 20GB that died, then got refurbished with pretty much all the pieces of a US 60GB model except for the hard drive - it's still a 20GB one. Now my problem is that it won't play My NZ PAL PS2 games because of "region restrictions". I've searched all the little gamer's forums on the net, but all I've managed to find is people complaining about the same problem, but no solutions! So, I'm hoping some of you guys could help me :) Because while I'm waiting for my uncut version of GTA IV to turn up in the letterbox, I can't play any other games! Grr. Pleasey please help me! :(

Umm yeah... that's expected.. Even though PS3 is not region locking the games for PS3, however PS2 games are still hugely depending on the region the PS3 console is sold at, and what PS2 game is being played.

Sad to say, you will not be able to play any PS2 games on it... though PS2 console is "cheap" enough to fill that void. I do sympathise your issue.

Yeah, PS2 hardware/ Games were region locked,  so it might be cheaper to buy a old Ps2 to play your legacy games, than looking at getting yoru PS3 modded ( which I am not even sure is possible with the emulation being down in software on the later PS3s)

OK, so there's no easy fix? That's a pain in the proverbials.I do actually have a PS2 still, but I was rather looking forward to seeing the emulation in practice. Oh well, I'll just hafta wait. Thanks anyway guys :)

I myself am looking to buy a Pal PS2 from the UK so that I can play bollywood singstar.  That game is not available in the U.S., but a lot of my friends and family would have a good time playing it.  I tried to figure out a way to hack a PS2 in the U.S. but it seemed pretty complicated and iffy. I have two NTSC PS3s (one's the MGS4 bundle 80gb PS3 and the other is a 60gb PS3).  I don't think there's any modding that can be done on them yet to play PAL PS2 games.

btw - I have a multisystem TV which is why I all I (should) need is a PAL PS2 console to play games.

There's no point to wait as Sony is not going to release PS2 emulation at all, as it will hurt PS3's games sale due to PS2 games and console is still some what a hot product and it's one that actually making money despite its lower price tag while PS3 is still making red on every console made/sold.

Are you in NZ? Pal SP2 is like $150 new at the moment which is a great buy if you're after a games console only with a massive amount of games.  No need to buy from overseas.

Current PS3's play PS1 games (all blocks and sqeaks) but not PS2 games.  Last one to do this was the 60GB version from memory.  Current ones use less power because they physically do not have the PS2 hardware on the board anymore.  Emulation would be the only way, but as mentioned by chiefie, this just isn't going to happen officially any time soon.

Hey, thanks for the response.  I am actually in the U.S.  I stumbled across this thread just googling around for PAL and PS2.  Both of my PS3s do play PS2 games (my 60gb will play them all, my 80gb will play 85% of them - it was in the MGS4 bundle - here in the states at least, that's a semi-backwards compatible PS3).

But I'm not counting on using my PS3 for PAL PS2 games.  I just need to get my hands on a PAL PS2.  That's the easiest route.

I read elswhere online that you don't need anything to play Pal games on a NTSC ps2, other than the appropriate tv or converter.  There is so much misinformation out there that i'm not even sure anymore.  I know I don't want to waste my money finding out and I surely don't want to have to open up my ps2 and start soldering.

I want to play the singstar rock ballads on my US ps2, that version is not sold in the US and has all the songs I want.
