I am wondering what the end play here is? As the article says, it's unlikely any of EA's competitors would use the information because let's be honest, it's proprietary and pretty easily traced back to EA, not to mention how scummy it would look.

They might have had a go at getting money in exchange for the information, but with no customer data affected, refusal to pay is EA's best bet.

It's embarrassing for EA, no doubt, but to be honest, hacks are so frequent now, it's almost you can expect big companies are going to be hit.

My guess ( as mentioned is the article) will be on finding  cheat codes and hacks for games..

They may also look at finding holes to sell forged ( but valid to the game)  In-app-purchases...  (which is where the real money in games is these days)

As anyone who's played any of EA titles over the last few years would know - EA code has no value since no developer worth their salt would want to copy that bug-ridden mess.

Sell each file back to them as DLC at $19.99 a pop.

To be honest, I don't think so. EA still have the source code, it wouldn't take many changes to invalidate current in-app purchase options (Usually these are done with game keys anyways). Who cares if they release cheat codes for Single Player, I think if a player wants to cheat to enhance their own experience, then so be it, EA can certainly make changes to shutdown online cheating if they want to.

I think it was done to hope they could embarrass EA into paying, or for Kudos.
