I have an xbox one at work which takes forever to download updates as it won't connect to the 5ghz network only 2.4ghz.

Wifi access point is directly above the xbox.

I setup a 5ghz only wifi ssid but it only shows 1 bar of signal strength. My samsung phone show 5 bars.

Is there anything I could do to make it faster. I get 4 bars on 2.4ghz.

Which model is it? Afaik the launch model max wifi support is n and it's a common point of failure. The S and X models have upgraded ac cards.

You could possibly look into replacing the wifi card, or try powerline for ethernet.

A temporary solution I did once was setup my laptop as wireless bridge and connect my xbox to it via ethernet.

Even the playstation has a terrible wifi adapter - my work around (if you have a wifi mesh) is plug the Ethernet from the device into the mesh satellite and its rock solid

(Mine is a Deco x20 mesh wifi)

What does the Wi-Fi router support in the way of Wi-Fi and the gaming console?

Wi-Fi 5 aka ac or Wi-Fi 6 aka ax?

It's the Original model not a S or X series. It can see the 5ghz Wi-Fi network but it's weaker than the 2.4ghz network.

Powerline wouldn't work as the room has its own sub distribution panel and the main network panel is on another distribution panel.

We're using Unifi AC-PRO Access points these support AC speeds. and the room has strong signal.

I would run an ethernet cable if I could easily.

The network hub for the building is 30m away in the middle of the building. and ceiling is exposed and quite high. in the room after the network hub. Both rooms have exposed ceilings.

We only have a single Ethernet cable going into the AP and that's all we down that end of the building.

Have you tried repositioning either of the devices by 100mm or so? Might just be sitting in a signal null.

as mentioned above, i think the original xbox one only supports 802.11n wireless. however, the AC-Pro has a second Ethernet port... might be an option for you.

tp link have a travel router that can be set to client mode so it acts as a wifi network card and the ethernet connection plugs into your pc/xbox ethernet port.

I have an older wifi4 N version that has worked well for various situations like this.

theres probably other similar devices out there.
A lot of routers (asus etc) can be setup similar as a wifi bridge but the tp link is tiny and can can be tucked out of site.

Gl.inet make some well regarded travel routers with AC and ax wifi if you want to do that. Otherwise another unifi AP will mesh up and give you the Ethernet port and have no double nat or Mac address issues like with repeaters or routers as a client device.

I am going to see if we can get an ethernet cable out of the secondary port on the AP. I had forgotten that the AC had a secondary port.

If that ends up being a problem I'll use another AP and set it to mesh mode.
