newbie here to Counter Strike Source.  Signed up and bought it on 'Steam'.

question for fellow players, can you play one on one with a friend via the internet, or do you have to use the servers provided and play with pros that snipe you after 20sec lol.

is there a way of doing this? somehow using each others IP to play just one on one?

Unfortunately not easily.

You can run a LAN server, but to run a server over the internet, you need to run the Half Life Dedicated Server (HLDS) which usualy means a seperate machine running it unless your system is fairly grunty you might get away with it and CS:S on the one system.

Another potential way around it is to run it over a VPN - something like Hamachi should work fine.

This way, you and your friend are on the same "LAN" and you just setup a LAN game.

yea, you could try looking for an empty server as well.  but otherwise limited options

CSS is a fairly old game meaning that almost everyone playing will be pretty good at it. Well of most servers anyway.
Ive been playing it for a year now, and i still cant get close to the sniping ability of most 'snipers'. I'd call myself pretty good though.
Best thing that ever helped me was new headphones, even though sound quality is comparitively rubbish in this game, it still gives an amazing sense of direction to when an enemy is going to approach around a corner.

As for playing 1v1, just find an empty server. There are heaps of empty servers. You'll get much better performance doing this than peer to peer i reckon.

I think you won't get a lot out of playing 1v1 TBH. I think you'd have more luck finding a busy deathmatch server, so then even if you die quickly you don't have to wait long to respawn.  This will also help you practising with the same weapons.

I'd also recommend try gun game servers as well as most rounds only last anything from 30 seconds to a minute, plus it will give you a chance to try different weapons.

counter strike in it's various iterations has ben out for donkeys years, and there are soem serious pros out there.
The learning curve is steeeeeeeeeep.

I played it religiously when it first came out as a half life mod, and got reasonably good. Usually had a positive kills/deaths ratio.

Went back to it a few months ago after 4-5 years without playing it, and got absolutley pwned.

Best bet for learning would be to join a public server, join the team that is winning, find the guy who has the most kills, and follow him around. :D

Either that or look for a GG server (gun game) where instead of buying weapons, when you kill someone it gives you a new weapon instantly instead.

This cuts down on the amount of people with sniper rifles, if you want to join a laid back GG server then have a look for the - DOA Oz Gungame Server - Ping is normally around 60 but is still definately playable.

Also we dont allow campers, they get slayed :) Feel free to pop by some time.
