Hi there.  Apologies in advance as I am sure that this question has probably been asked on this forum before.  I can't find it though.

My XBox 360 Elite has stopped working and I now only get the 3 red lights of death. It is covered under Harvey Norman extended warranty and I have now taken it in to them to see if it can be repaired.

If it can't be repaired, I will get a new console. My question is, can I take my existing 120GB hard drive and use it with the new console? I am sure that I can, but I don't know if it will keep all of my existing information, such as gamer tags, xbox live account, downloaded games, achievements etc, if I do end up transferring my hard drive to a new console.

Could someone please help me with this question.  Much appreciated.  Cheers, Mark

I believe that for warranty repairs, the Xbox should be sent away with the HDD and faceplate removed.. but not sure when HN's doing it for you.

Yes you can.
When you return back your unit, you don't need to attach the hdd.

I have done this twice now :)

Thanks for your responses. I am relieved by the answers.

Just had a call from Harvey Norman, saying that they have a brand new XBox 360 Elite console ready for me and that they have attached my old hard drive.

Only 5 days after taking the damaged console in, so I am very happy with the service and quick turn around time.

Buy one - they are awesome.

On topic - Yeah, the service for Xbox's are usually pretty good. Seeming some of the earlier models had lots of problems (RROD, etc) they kinda had to. Though I'm hearing now when you get your box replaced/fixed they chuck another 1 (or 3?) year warranty on it. Thats a pretty SWEET deal, imo.

Update. I have now got my new replacement xbox 360 with my old hard drive attached. All previous profiles, game saves and achievements are stil there which is great.

However, I now have a problem when it comes to any xbox live stuff that I had downloaded from xbox live onto my previous console, including xbox live games, original xbox games and extra game content such as extra songs for Lips, extra maps for Halo 3 etc. I can find this stuff on my hard drive, but I cannot access any of it except in the following circumstances.

The only way that I can access this previously downloaded content is when I am actually in xbox live under my xbox live profile (different to my gamer profile). Previously anyone with a profile on my system (son, daughter, wife, friends etc) could access the downloaded content without needing to be in xbox live.

This is hopeless. Is there something that I can do to correct this? When I went into xbox live, I downloaded all of this content again - it was free as it recognised that I had previously downloaded this content. I still couldn't access this content except via xbox live.

Is there any other way that I can access this content without having to go into xbox live? It is quite a hassle moving my modem from the computer room to hook up to the xbox and I don't want to have to do this every time. Also it only works currenly under my xbox live profile. I have a different gamer profile which all of my game play takes place under. This means that I cannot get any further achievements from downloaded content now.

Please help me as I am tearing my hair out - what little there is left of it.

You need to transfer the licenses for the DRM content.

Can't remember where the link on the Xbox.com site is, but sure it is on there somewhere.

EDIT: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/

Maybe ring the Xbox Support line as well

Thanks for the help guys. I will try this tomorrow. My only concern is that I do not have wireless broadband. I just have one modem and an ethernet cable.

I need to go into the website via my computer. Instructions on the website show the 1st part of this process is to go into transfer process via xbox.com site. Once I have initiated this, I need to go into xbox live via my xbox 360. This means disconnecting from the internet and reconnecting via xbox 360. I hope that chopping and changing from one to the other like this will not mean that I can't complete this process. Does anyone know if this is the case? Cheers

Not a problem. You get x minutes to do it (1 hour from memory) before it resets and you have to start the process again.

Don't bother phoning them as you will be queueing just to hear the same thing.

Bear in mind that you are only allowed to do this once per 12 months - if you have any reason to do it before this you won't be able to unless you plead a good case. They probably would only accept console failure/repair/replacement as an acceptable reason.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help guys. I have now fixed this problem.

I actually got a guy at work to log into the xbox site and handle that side of things, whilst I connected to xbox live at home.

I am very relieved that this issue has now been sorted. Cheers.
