Hi There,

We have a media server setup (PS3 Media Server) on a PC and the PS3 is connected via wireless... so streaming bluray movies is a no go unless i want to run the cable from the cubboard to the PS3 and then remove it again (in an apartment and no way to run ethernet).

Has anyone used a 200mbit powerline kit for this purpose (or any other etc)? If so, how good was it?

Simon

I remember Waikato University used IP over Power to get internet into one of the old halls of residence when there was no way to get wires waround the place. Basically it was horrible. The line attenuation caused tons of dropped packets and really high latency. Personally I would try every other option before trying this, but if you have no other option then it might just work, but it wont be very good.

I have 5 powerline adapters setup where i live (slower 85mbit) that is running through a massive building (hostel, would be over 100 plugs in the building, copious amount of tvs, computers, heaters etc etc being used, wiring is a shambles too) i havnt tried streaming blurays across them but they work well for what we use them for (internet, gaming over xbox live and psn network, general networking / filesharing etc)

The lag it introduces is not great, in fact i would say its non existent. If the run from your cupboard to where you want to go isnt very long and your getting the 200mps units i would say they would be great!.. the one thing with these are they like there own plug points to them selves, you can share plug points but the interference of the other devices affects the speed you get out of it.

Get some from DSE or somewhere that has a 7 day return policy, if they dont work then take them back, simple as that!

This is coming from someone that uses them on a daily basis, not from someone with an opinion who has never actually touched one.

I agree that the best way to find out if it works is to try it. There are lots of things that can effect this, such as how the wiring is setup in the apartment, how many outlets there are on each part of the circuit, and the quality of the wire used (thickness etc).

I found an article on computerworld comparing the different types over IP over power so you might want to have a read on it first. Basically they conclude that wifi is better, but you may find that going over the shorter distance it will work really well.

@garvani: I would just like to point out that the last line in your post feels a lot like a personal dig at me, which really isnt needed. I may not have worked with them before, but I lived with a guy who helped implement the project at the university halls, so I heard a lot about how awful they were there.

It wasnt a personal dig at you at all. There are a lot of people on here that will add there 2c and bash them without even trying them. I use them and can testify they work well, within limits, as you stated there are things that will degrade performance.

When was the university project attempted?

Ok thats cool, no worries. The problem with the internet is intentions in something written is always up to the individual interpretation haha. The project went into effect last year, and as far as I am aware they are still using it. There was concrete brick walls with steel rods inside if I recall so there was no way to use wireless or run new cables without incurring huge costs.

Tried them doing exactly what you are attempting to do - was rubbish so ended up doing the ugly 'run the ethernet cable up the stairs and through the office door' routine. Live in a modern townhouse and the lag was awful. Sold the powerline adaptors on Trademe. I think the moral of the story is that you just dont know until you try it, I hope you have better luck than me. The wireless network connection worked far better (mine even lagged on SD video). I think the opinion above saying try it and see is a good one.

Ahh interesting, I'd always been keen to try these out, our wireless area is extremely crowded and flaky and degrades and I stream the output from my dreambox to the laptop.
