So I just did the latest firmware update, and tried to play a divx from my pc through it.  Played the movie many times before with no problem (my kids favourite movie).

It now comes up with an error saying I need to connect to xbox live while trying to play it to download a media encoderthingee.  I did this years ago and it always worked sweet.

Now my problem is that I cant connect to live and try to stream the movie at the same time, as I dont use a wireless adaptor on my xbox so I move the ethernet cable between the pc and the router dpending on what I am trying to do.

I heard somewhere that you can use a standard wireless dongle instead of the crazily priced 360 one.  Tried that - didnt work.

I have now resorted to converting all my media to WMV in order to please my kids.

Anyone out there got an easier solution?

I dont have a 360 anymore so im no authority on the divx subject.
First of all you cant use any other brand usb wireless adapter with the 360. The only way to do this is to buy an access point, put it in client mode and attach that to your 360.
I read somewhere (and maybe not correctly) that you have to have your 360 connected to the net now to watch divx movies, i thought it sounded really odd and stupid at the time, but maybe it was correct. someone out there will be able to confirm this however

yeah it seems to be the case of having to be connected. A real pain and almost sounds like MS is forcing you into their wireless adaptor. Pain in the bum as converting to WMV doubles the size of the files!

Yes, I needed to re-download the optional media update, which was installed a couple of updates agon, but everything now seems to work without Xbox Live.

Yep problem is you need to download it while attempting to paly a file, so while I can connect to xbox live, I cannot connect to my pc at the same time.

Looks like I will have to stick to WMV

If i understand you correctly, you need to be connected to the pc to stream a file across? but also need to be connected to the net to get the update?? Correct?
IF that is the case then why dont you burn a movie to disc or put it on a usb drive, then connect to the net and play the file, that way you can get your update, and not have to worry about all the wmv problems.

I wouldn't think so -- just find the download in the list of downloadable games, from memory it is called Optional Media Update.
You could also put a divx movie on a flashdrive.

Sweet all worked, just found the optional media update under the games download menu. I had previously been looking under "M" for media update.

Thanks for your help guys
