My apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer.

I'm just about to buy a new PS3, mainly for playing Bluray and divx/xvid. I've been advised to copy the files onto the PS3's harddrive to play them rather than stream them. I have Win7 on my PC. How do I transfer the files over the network.

Windows 7 Media Streaming/Sharing is sufficient and it does quite well... It just work.

If you do have certain "stubborn" file format that PS3 can't play, then PS3 Media Server can help, but by all mean, try use Windows 7 Media Streaming as that's what I use at home network.

hi, you can transfer them through a USB stick directly to the PS3 by using the copy To command with the triangle button

It's easier to stream it from Windows 7 though. Who told you not to stream it?

Oh key thing with streaming is, your PC must be somewhat grunty and best use gigabit NIC if you are going to use the PC concurrently with PS3 video streaming.

No point of copying over to PS3 (either via USB/Network).

whoops, my last reply came ages after the other haha

- for streaming directly to the PS3 you can use any old computer with a 100mb NIC it doesn't amtter
- for transcoding through Ps3 Media server on the PC, a dual core would help at least 2ghz, with about 1-2gb ram a 100mb network card is still fine, even streaming to 2x PS3s
I can stream 2x 1080p MKVs to both my PS3s and it'll run them fine :) it's just a little slow at pulling the thumbnails down for larger directories

You could even use wireless for streaming/transcoding, no real point copying all your movies to the PS3, unless you want to save power by turning your PC off

Or have a power efficient PC that does the media streaming... I'm heading into that sort of direction, it will be headless PC (or Mac) that could be used for RDP and as a download proxy and NAS-lite.

Thanks for all the tips.

I'm keen to copy the files across to the PS3 so that I don't need to have both the PS3 and my PC on at the same time. As both will be on the network it seems sensible to just copy the files across the network on the PS3 HDD but I haven't been able to find anything which says how to do it.

I do have a pretty good PC (quad core). At the moment I play the files from a flashdrive through my DVD player, but I occasionally lose track of what I have to watch. It would be good to transfer them to the PS3 as I get them and then delete them after they are watched. Using a flash drive to transfer them seems a little low tech with such a sophisticated machine that is on the network.

Just use Windows 7's Media Streaming, then in PS3 it will pop up under Video, then browse to the folder then browse to the title that you want to view (or copy); press triangle, then Copy.

BUT when you get that far... you might as well just play and watch.
