Hi guys, any of you know if PS3 Fat is still available for purchase in stores? (not pre-owned) I actually think PS3 Fat looks better and I prefer to have backward compatibility. Thanks!

I assume you mean backwards, as it PS2 games?

Sorry, you missed the boat by a few years. The original 40GB PS3 (fat) supported PS2, that got replaced by the 60GB PS3 (fat) not long after and ever since that model there has been and will be no PS2 support.

EDIT: I got the sizes wrong, but here is the official Sony information.

Sorry to be picky, the 60GB version came first then 40GB.  I have an original fatty :-)  It can play PS1 games too...

Cheers, Stevo

ALL PS3's play PS1 games. You will NOT find any 60Gb console (the one backwards compatible with PS2 games) new in any shop.

Although you can find a few on TradeMe.

The new slim is great though, runs silent and cool with 120gb or 250gb Hard drive.

Thanks guys, I guess I really missed the boat by a couple of years :S
I never had a ps2 so was thinking to get a ps3 that plays ps2 games. Don't wanna buy a PS2 slim to clutter up my living room!

btw - you really don't want to play ps2 games IF you have a large screen tv (say 42" and above)

Just bite the bullet and buy a PS3 slim and a PS2 slim. the PS2 is only $99 brand new from EB, and probably cheaper elsewhere.

FWIW the Slim doesn't support Linux. They have nerfed it.

Might be now. But get a PS3, play a few PS3 games running through HDMI cable at 1080p on a Full HD large panel TV, then you'll find you won't play your PS2 games any longer. We have a stack of about 40 PS2 games gathering dust and haven't been touched since we brought our release day 60GB fat console , PS3 games and Blu-ray movies and feeding into a 50" Full HD Plasma.

Psx or rather psone games run on all models, its just the original 60gb that does ps2. You can tell by if it has 4 usb ports on the front plus built in memory card reader.
