Hi,

I have been tearing my hair out on this and I haven't got much to spare.

I just purchased a Xbox360 (older style with Jasper chip set) and would like to link this to my PC for media sharing.

My PC runs on XP using Avast security with a Linksys WRT54G router.

The only way I can make the xbox connect is to turn my windows firewall off.

FYI - I have checked the windows firewall to ensure it had the requisite ports open under application
Windows Media Player 11 and I have checked that plug and play is enabled under services.msc.

For a easy answer, I was wondering as my router has a firewall incorporated, do I really need windows firewall enabled.??

Preferably I'd like to configure the firewall to let the xbox connect so any help would be much appreciated.

As a aside, I assume the xbox media centre connection instructions are out of date when you select it on the console. It says note this number and then go to www.xbox/pcsetup but when you go there and click xp - it only advises you to install media player 11 (which doesn't seem to need a number).

Cheers

Avast has a "shield" that acts like a Firewall - check that one too. If possible add the Xbox IP address to the ignore/allow list in both Avast and your Windows Firewall.

The problem with Avast (Iused it for years) is that there are too many shields. I just run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall now.

Thanks for that. I'll check my Avast settings.

However I didn't think that would be the issue as it works when I turn the Windows firewall off even though AVAST stays on.

If this is the case then I would assign a static IP to this XBOX and added that IP to the exception list on Windows Firewall...

Out of interest, I solved my Xbox connection issues.

I achieved this with a firmware upgrade for my Linksys WRT 54G Router.
Just why that would help - I don't know but it did.

So now I have reinstated Full avast and Windows Firewall with appropriate port forwards.
