Does anyone know if it is possible to extend the cable for the Wii Sensor?

The sensor bar? Its actually just two LEDs, nothing more. The sensor is actually the wiimote and not the sensor bar. You can get "wireless" ones at EB games for about $20-30.

Look on you tube someone actually managed to use candles in place of the wii "sensor" bar.

What I would like is a battery pack to pluf the sensor into.

The sensor bar is actually made up of ten infrared LEDs at three different angles for triangulation.

I would refer you to Wikipedia, but I'm an epic noob here on geekzone and don't have the privileges.
