We've been watching our bandwitdh closely this month, due to downloading LOTRO since it is now free to play. 10GB file.

We play World of Warcraft and noticed yesterday that our total usage was 1872MB. 1.8GB for one day!

All we did was play WoW, read the Herald, check facebook, check WoWhead/WoWWiki, check emails.  No file sharing went on. She said our usage between 12-4pm was 127mb avg p/h. We raided between 2pm and 5pm.  Then @ 8pm when I was completing my Nagrand quests and hubby was doing the Tourney we used 322MB.  This does not sound right.

Does this usage seem normal for two people playing WoW for one day?

We are on Telecoms 40GB plan and since Friday 24th, have used 13GB's over our plan,  that's according to Telecoms usage calculator.  And Saturday we had no internet as their was a fault on the line that they fixed on Sunday.

We've never had a problem with our usage in the past.  We hardly come close to using all our bandwidth.  And when we file share, I make note of the upload and download amounts.

We have a wired network, no wireless.

For today, we are just going to play WoW like usual and see what the data says for tomorrow.  I don't know what else to do.  We need to play wow, but our account does not reset till the 12th of October.  So we are paying $2 per GB till then.

Be aware that many of the games are using BitTorrent for patching. So once your copy of the game is patched up but you haven't quit the patching program, it will continue serving as seed to other gamers.

I can tell you that LoTRO is up to 60mb an hour, a quick google tells me WoW is circa 40gb an hour however both those figures are upper limits, multiple person raids etc. It's entirely dependent on where you are and what you're doing, how many people you're with etc. If you're out on your own in the middle of nowhere, that can drop to 5-10mb an hour.

Sounds like something else is definitely going on in the background there. The "netstat -b" command is always a good starting point to see what apps are running connections from your machine.

Hope you enjoy LoTRO btw :-)

Patch 4.0.1 Stage 3 available on Background Downloader
The 3rd stage of Patch 4.0.1 is now available on the background downloader, it looks like Patch 4.0.1 will hit the live servers very soon.

I'm pretty sure the default settings for the background downloader means it starts downloading either as soon as you launch the game or as soon as you close it, you might want to check it as the full size of this patch is 4.something GB's and it will come down via that background downloader over the coming weeks.

You can check the background downloader settings from the Launcher window.

Also if you're using more than one computer to play World of Warcraft, also bear in mind they will download the data separately (and not necessarily from each other). So you may want to only download patch data with one machine and copy the final patches when they're released to the other machine.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies.

Only my machine is running the background downloader.  Hubbys machine is still off, due to the last patch the other week bugging the launcher, so he has not switched back.  Background downloader hasn't been on this morning on my machine.

I worked out using my PerformanceFU that I use about 17mb per hour.  That was based on 5000B/s (In and Out).  It normally fluctuates around  3000-3500b/s.  So I've rounded up to be safe.

So for the two of us that is 34mb p/h. I use more addons than my hubby, which is why I rounded up higher.

So for the 12 hours we were playing WoW yesterday it works out to about 408m/b.  And yes the background downloader was on earlier in the day on my machine.  So maybe I got it all downloaded?  We'll find out when I look at my Usage tomorrow lol.

As for LOTRO, I am still finding it confusing.  So used to playing WoW hehehe.  I need to copy it over to hubby's machine so he can play with me.   But it seems really good.  It's just nice to have a change.

Well if you have any questions, feel free to PM me or start a new thread. I'm by no means a hardcore player but I've been there since launch.

Be aware that if p2p is enabled for the background patcher, you're likely uploading as much as you download, which can hit your cap hard if not expected.

Yeah back when I used to be play those damn addictive mmo's I used to make sure the background downloader was always disabled - then you have control over the when and how the patch downloads.

Plenty of download mirrors for wow patches usually, eg:

Yesterday we had much better usage.  We used approx 800mb's.  No background downloader.  No streaming content, no file sharing.

During our raid yesterday it got up to about 8000Bytes per second.  So most of my usage on Wednesday must of been part of the patch.

Just sucks that this patch is hitting before my bandwidth renews lol.  Oh well, I guess it happens.
