Hey guys

At the moment I have a ati 5770 and want to upgrade. I know there are only a few games that need this sort of power eg dirt 2 and just cause 2 they only need a ati 5750+
and for some reason it plays games crapy. (tf2 makes the fan go max while bc2 doesn't)
So I was wondering if the new ati cards would be a good upgrade. I was looking at the core clocks on the new ati 6870 at its looks better than the ati 5970 and its half the price! (yea I dont know that much about Video cards)

This G.P.U should be able to play all games today and tm right and get awsome fps on games like TF2 (My fav game) Also what sort of FPS would I get on games like
                                                                                  MW2
                                                                                  BC2
                                                                                  Mafia 2

I know its hard to say with out having the card and it being new and all but it would be around the 5870 and 5970 right.

Oh thats right you will need to know what else I have..

CPU: Intel Quad core 2.66 (Q9400)
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800MHZ
PSU: 520W
FAN: 1 Rear fan (and cpu, Psu and well the GPU)

Where I buy my videocards from (http://www.tastech.co.nz/product_info.php?products_id=335047)
I know the was a form about this guy on geek zone (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=31806) but I live in Christchurch and He lives close to me so I pick up.

Also I would love to go back to Nvidia (the ati 5770 is my first ati card ive had)
So if theres other cards that will play these games good plz tell my price rang is only $450 (I will got to $600 if its worth it and wont need to upgrade it any time soon)

Thx

depending on who you hear from the HD6870 will be a replacement for anything between the hd5770, HD5830 or HD5850.

If you want something much better wait for the 69xx cards.

Nvidia wise the best solution would probably be 2 x 450GTX in sli if you have the motherboard to support it. The 460GTX is better than the HD5770, but not amazingly so. Plus extra heat/noise.

What res are you running at?

If possible i think you should get another 5770.
It wont cost too much and will nearly double your performance.
Did some research on the 6xxx series the other day.

6850 and is about equal or even slightly slower then the current 5850..
From what i understand the 6xxx series are slightly more price competitive

I don't think the Nvidia GTX 460 or AMD Radeon 6850 would be a big enough step up from your current card, assuming you are gaming at 1920x1080 resolution.

Adding another 5770 in crossfire is a good option, cheaper than a 6870 and will give you almost the same performance.

However, a single 6870 will have a slight advantage in performance and several other advantages like: less heat, less noise, less power, don't have to wait for updated profiles to get performance improvements (crossfire profiles for games) etc.

The Nvidia option you'd want to look at is probably the GTX 470 but it's notably more expensive in NZ than a AMD Radeon 6870.

Right now I'd wait a week or so for the 6870 to come down from "new release" pricing if you are going to go for a 6870.

agreed. you better off xfire 5770.

6870 is nowhere near 5970. it should be roughly close to 5850. there is no single card at present that can beat 5970 performance.

thx guys yea I cant have 2 videocards (didn't think about that when I built it) What would be a good Videocard then under $550 And yea I play games at 1080 unless I have my second screen in as I use my 24" to watch vids and my small 19' to play games on (1440X900)

I would wait for some decent 68xx benchies to come out. Up to $550, a GTX470 is probably the best bet at the moment.

There are heaps of reviews... anandtech, guru3d, tomshardware, pcper, hardocp etc etc etc

Anyway this sort of graph from pcper is probably want you to look at.

Note: the eVGA GTX460 comes stock with higher than standard clocks (ie: factory overclocked) so it's able to keep up with the Radeon 6870.

If you want to buy right now for 1920x1080 I'd probably get a Radeon 6870 or Nvidia GTX470, probably the 6870 personally since it has the newer features HDMI 1.4a, cooler, quieter less power etc.
