Hi guys,
it seems you are all very knowledgeable on gaming PCs so I wanted to see where you buy your parts or even whole computer systems?

I have been using a Mac Pro workmachine (8 core 2.8Ghz, 16GB ram, 8 TB drives, GF 8800GT 512MB) til now but the graphics card is just too weak and so I figured I might as well buy a dedicated gaming PC.

Ideally I wouldn't want to spend more than ~$1500 (without displays) is that reasonable for something capable or running Black Ops at 1920x1200 resolution smoothly?

If you know of a nice online shop that has one of those 'pc builder' things where you can pick your parts that you can recommend that would be awesome but I am fully capable of building my own PC with ordered parts if that saves me some money.

Any help would be much appreciated (where to buy & what to buy for my budget).

Thanks.

Actually, you could just copy this $1500ish gaming build from earlier this month (looks spot on to me)

Thanks you guys! Awesome links.

@Ragnor: Do you think that 1500 build will run Black Ops smoothly @ 1920x1200 res with details and all the good graphics turned up?

Should be good.

If you're worried you could spend +$80 and get a Radeon 6870 instead of 6850.

Here's a comparison of Nvidia GTX460 vs Radeon 6870 in Black Ops

Note: 6850 would be probably between the two in performance ie: above GTX 460 below Radeon 6870.

Awesome, thanks for the link.
Have started a topic in the CL build forums and am planning on purchasing a similar build to the $1500 above with the 6870 in it.

Cheers,
Jannis

I feel it pertinent you be warned that there are even people with grunty builds that are having issues running Black Ops. So don't be too surprised if you buy a wicked build, and Black Ops doesn't run well.

The issues seem to be with the netcode, SP runs fine. Hopefully a patch will be forthcoming soon.

Just a quick reply, I went with just buying a ATI (or AMD now) HD 5870 1GB as an upgrade to my Mac Pro work station which ends up being the following system:

2x 4 core Intel Xeon 2.8Ghz CPU
16GB Ram
ATI 5870 1GB

CoD: BO completely maxed at 1920x1200 res runs smooth as with these specs. Pretty sweet game.
Out of interest, I tried maxing out GTA IV with this system and it was pretty poorly playable… badly optimized game i think…

Glad to hear it. My AMD 4200+ is not up to the task unfortunately
