I am not sure if it is allowed either but it looks interesting. I have seen some of the USB ones appear on trade me.

Its bit of a grey area (PS3 jailbreaking) - Sony havent deemed the act itself as illegal (as much as they can without going through courts etc), however they are trying to prevent the sale of the devices.
