Hi

I am having a huge issue with steam download speed.  Just updating the client can take 30 minutes and downloads crawl along at 40kbps or less, thats if they are not "suspended".   I have no issues with speed on downloads in any other apps.

Is it just me because it seems practically useless if it's going to take a week to download any games.

Let me know what your speed seems like and if you are having any issues.

Thanks

Check where you're downloading from, it's under Steam->Settings->Downloads+Cloud. Make sure it's set to NZ, however I get same download rates from USA.

What isp are you with?

Have you made sure that you are not running any software that is known to conflict with steam? There is a list of these on steams support section.

Have you tried restarting it several times?

Also, if you know someone with the game already, ask them to back up their steam copy, and get a copy of their back up. You can then install it again from the back up.

I have noticed that the client updates are always slow, but 0once theyre done and I start downloading games etc, it flies along. (Think Orcon run a Steam cache ?)

The regional setting is just a hint to the client to try and use local servers. However, there are hardly any local servers and the content mirrors only hold a subset of content not all content.

Xnet (via Recoil) and Slingshot host content mirrors on their network but they are filtered to only be available to their own customers.

A NZ mirror hosted by Affinity.net.nz recently popped up but it's filtered to certain users too (no idea who though?).

See here:
http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/

So basically there are no unfiltered public NZ content mirrors and even if you are on Slingshot or Xnet the local mirror may not have the content you are downloading so often your downloads will come from Australian or US servers.

A lot of the Aussie ISP's run publicly available servers (which is beneficial for us).

Q: What ISP are you on?

For me steam downloads are very very slow in the evenings (with Orcon, so no surprise). First thing in the morning is the best time to download.

I have found a fix that works for me. I have changed the server it uses in the settings and getting much faster downloads.

Not sure why but the Aussie / nz ones only seem to cause trouble for me.
