Hi, im looking at the Dell XPS 17. Seems like a good deal but I was wondering if there are any other companys what sell gaming laptops over here except Dell and Alienware aka Dell again lol. Christchurch would be better but not worry if has to be shipped from up north.

Hey, I brought an Asus Republic of Gamers G51 from Just Laptops on Trademe. It was pretty much 2/3 the price of the Alienware equivalent.

These are the same people who add up the speeds of all the cores and advertise that as the CPU speed... ie: 1.6ghz Quad Core i7 somehow equals a 6.4ghz CPU. That always bugs me...

NZ is very light on gaming specific notebooks. I have one of the previous Dell XPS models, the one with dual 8800GTX cards etc. It plays most games at 1920x1200 with all the bells on but isn't DX11 and is now several generations behind, although you wouldn't know it over here by what else is on offer.

The current XPS line isn't that flash so we're stuck with the hideously overpriced Alienware, or something that's only just suitable for 'real' gaming. The problem is, Alienware are the only official laptops in NZ to offer the latest gen GPU's in a timely fashion, along with a decent warranty, and I suspect they know it.

Considering how watered down mobile GPU's are compared with their desktop counterparts, a lot of 'gaming' laptops here are more flash than dash, and people will still pay a premium for anything with 'gaming' attached to the label despite lower res screens and slower GPU's.

I'd love to see some OEM Clevo based laptops over here. Sager, MSI, something customisable to the users needs\wants. This whole area is an untapped market in NZ.

Yup, that bugs me too... It seems that most PC/Laptop "shops" on Trademe do the same thing.

I've seen some very reasonably MSI gaming laptops around (http://www.msimobile.com/level2_productlist.aspx?id=6). Though as you said, any gaming laptop will be 'watered down' compared to a desktop.

I've started getting into laptop gaming since Steam for Mac was released. It's quite fun not having to be tethered to a desktop anymore!

MSI are definitely one of the up and comers, but in NZ they only carry a 1 year warranty. Gaming laptops inherently run hot, and gambling on a warranty is not a good course of action when a replacement GPU will run you four figures. Incidently, this is another area where Dell\Alienware are excellent, in being able to extend your warranty, or re-certify 2nd hand laptops to get a warranty.

QFT. The F60 i7 verison I bought is fantastic
