I saw GeoHot hacked the PS3 System.
They released the METLDR (root) keys for programmers/developers to make cfw
I was wondering when can we expect to see CFW released to install on PS3's ?

Not sure. But there is a second hacker group that recently managed to crack the PS/3.

So there's finally some movement ;)

It's all go over @ psx-scene.com (19000 users browsing at the moment!)

AFAIK the console has been completly opened up with release of the root keys (it took 4 years to crack!). fail0verflow team had cracked the keys below the root and geohot used those to figure out Sony's uber private root key, which they can't change without a hardware revision (ps4? =P).

This will/has allowed devs to 'sign' homebrew apps etc which the ps3 sees as legit software..

Sony has replied saying it will fix the issue with a series of network updates which i think is Sony playing it cool when it comes to the public eye as according to respected devs/coders we have the root keys so there is not much they can do. Possibly an update which scans for CFW resulting in a PSN ban maybe? AFAIK if we can sign any homebrew stuff then there is no need for a CFW.. - Lots of speculation at those forums and a lot of it is over my head lol.

Devs are working on CFW, backup managers, signing tools etc so i think we should see some stable tools within the next few days..

Actually, it took this group just 1 year to crack the pS3.

The 'real' hackers only started hacking the ps3 when Sony disabled linux support a year or so ago - that 'pissed' off the hackers who then determined to break the encryption. I guess, it is a part time job for these people too.

It's a fascinating scene, the the hackers claiming they are anti-piracy but at the same time supplying the tools for the pirates to pirate.

It's like a game of chess to hackers i guess.

Sounds like pretty much everything else in this world, someone supplies it and it is up to the user how they use it.

Also, Mathieulh found the psp keys inside inside the ps3. :D So now both the ps3/psp are fully hacked and anyone can sign homebrew to run on official firmwares. XD Sony is trying to sue both Geohot and team failoverflow but by the sounds of it theres no big evidence that can be used against them yet. I'm not sure how far the ps3s keys have gone so far, but for the psp, a lot of homebrew can be signed now. Sadly nothing that needs kernel access like custom firmware/backup loaders/flashers etc can be signed at the moment but it shouldn't be too long :P.
