I've come to the realisation that I don't play as many games as I used to because my desktop computer is stuck in a different room of the house, and it can be pretty anti-social to go off there to play games.  Also, in winter, it's not particularly warm in there.

I've been contemplating getting a gaming laptop, but my desktop is still powerful enough to play most games, and it seems a shame to let it go to waste.  So I've wondered whether it's practical/feasible to implement some kind of game streamer, so the desktop can "host" the game and do all the heavy lifting, and I can get a medium-range laptop for gaming anywhere in the house over the LAN, and possibly hook it up to the TV with a wireless keyboard/mouse for full screen gaming from time to time.

However, I'm skeptical about how effective this would be.  I can forsee some big latency issues over the wireless network (currently wireless G), and if I used a wireless mouse/keyboard on the laptop, then there's likely to be even more issues with responsiveness.

Anyone used a game streaming system?  Are they worh the effort, or is it just asking for problems?  A quick google came up with streammygame.com.  I haven't looked into it in any depth, but as its free to try, I might give it a go tonight...

Not worth the effort. Performance will be shockingly bad.

That said check out OnLive, they have a system that might interest you. Not on this side of the world yet but the tech is interesting none-the-less.

Could look into something like this:

Then you could use your graphics card from your desktop in your laptop.

Depends what kind of games you want to play. I suspect that if it was turned based strategy or something that didn?t require ?twitch? reflexes you would probably be fine provided you could build it in the first place.
For anything that requires multiplayer reflexes, (FPS, Starcraft 2 etc) then don?t bother, even if it could work it would be next to unplayable.

As an alternative, why not get a wireless keyboard and mouse with a decent range for your desktop, and run a VGA or HDMI cable to your TV and play your PC games from the comfort of your living room with no problems.

If your computer is rarely getting used where it is, why not just move it into the lounge?
put the box by your tv, and for way less then a gaming laptop you can get a wireless mouse and keyboard. Job done.....even getting a new extra quiet psu and cpu fans to cut down on the noise would still leave you with change.

then you can also use it for browsing.

The downside with this and/or getting a ps3 is you cant use it and watch normal tv at the same time.

Not tried it at all.

Comments: Microsoft RemoteFX could be worth a go if you have 2K8 SP1 and a supported card. Virtualisation solutions (and remote clients) are also adding 3D support. & Remote Desktop has better support than it used to, but very limited.
