You need a Live account (hotmail/windows live) but you can set that up at the same time if you don't have one already.

You can join for free (Silver) or pay (credit card or pre-paid voucher) for a Gold subscription.

That is all.

Either of them. You can go www.xbox.co.nz  and sign in with your account to buy the Xbox live gold subscription using your credit card or paypal or you can buy the xbox live gold subscription directly from the xbox dashboard on your console.

You can also buy the subscription card and microsoft points from major electronic retailers like Noel Leemind, Dicksmith electronics etc.

Noel leeming sells the 12 months subscription for $70 and 3 month for $40 I think.

I would suggest using the prepaid cards as Microsoft makes it really difficult to cancel if you use a credit card.

+1 to that, I used a credit card and had a hell of a time getting them to cancel it when i wanted to change to prepaid vouchers.  They tried to automatically renew my gold account but I had cancelled my card.  So they suspended my account and put me back on Silver---all good I thought I would just get a prepaid card to enable it again...

Nope, they wanted me to pay the renewal fee before they would let me use the prepaid card.  I fought with them on the phone saying "why would I pay for something I don't have...you put me on Silver...I haven't used anything and I don't owe you anything...."

Took a bit of back and forth but they agreed and let me use the prepaid voucher.  Very dodgy indeed.

They managed to bill my expired card; I don't know why that's even possible!

How long ago is this? Xbox.co.nz has had the ability to remove the credit card feature for well over a year now. Go to 'My Xbox' then 'Accont' then 'Manage Payment Options' and there you will see your credit card which you can remove, add a new one or setup paypal for future payments. No need to ring the call center.

The xbox.co.nz domain doesn't even load for me... Not that I want anything there, just checking, since I don't have an xbox account - actually will create another discussion for this.

It's working for me too, on TCL (using the Clearnet DNS).

It loads now. It wasn't before. Never mind.

While looking around I found out 6,000 points (required for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood) costs $99 online - but you can buy these for $90 at Dick Smith. Ten percent discount is not bad ;)
