God how I hate cut and paste press release journalism.

This is a fine example: http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/6092371/Microsoft-rolls-out-Xbox-TV-platform

So you can now control your xbox with voice commands or kinnect gestures.

Great, most of the stuff here doesn't apply because we don't get NetFlix et al and there is no mention that you have to have your xbox hooked up to your Windows PC for anything on the internet to actually work.

Well done Stuff.

By the way, I tried streaming stuff to my xbox on the weekend but my laptop struggled because some Windows process was running and using major CPU resources. Is there any way to get around this?

Do whatever you want to do man.

Will that be youtube and mlb.tv directly on the xbox?

That will actually be really cool if I don't have to have my laptop running to watch YouTube on the TV.

@billgates Thanks for the info. Microsoft's PR told me something different. Which is strange considering I see also Microsoft tweet which points to 4am NZ time.

Was hoping for the update when I turned on this morning, but no dice yet , oh well. Also wonder how much of this stuff is going to require gold to work.

Stuff News has got really bad after their Parent company laid off a whole bunch of reporting staff (or closed the entire wing?). Their Tech section seems rife with articles from the Sydney Morning Herald now, and most of those are biased and opinionated blogs rather than legit news and reviews. They're rarely relevant to NZ also... Really very sad.

Anyhoo, looking forward to the change in XBox dashboard.

It's only going to get worse since the closure of NZ Press Association.

The dashboard update has been delayed. I got word from Microsoft this morning that they will have more details on update release for us this afternoon.

I have the developer update and as you know about things I can speak without breaching NDA. The cloud game profiles are nice, but if you save to cloud you run the risk of corrupting the save by playing offline and you can be kicked from game if your net crashes (3rd party information on that last point). Something to seriously consider in New Zealand.

I got the update yesterday, no sign of TV though. Everything's moved again and I can't even figure out how to resume playback of an HD movie if I drop out to the dashboard, short of removing and reinserting the disk :(

OK so once I got over the Stuff report which told me nothing I actually got excited about the prospect of YouTube over the Xbox on the TV.

Thanks Geek Zoners for actually informing me.

Is anybody doing this now? How is it?

I've been using it with a US VPN - so I get access to much of the US content and am very impressed so far. The YouTube app is really easy to use - particularly for just surfing the latest entertaining clips.
