On Friday I had a UFB fibre connection installed... very interesting.

Job started at 07:30 with the Chorus / Visonstream team being on the door step bright and early with a team of 5, so along with my Account Manager and SDM from Chorus and a few WxC people sitting around watching we watched the progress and took a few photo's of the days progress (great Job on the Photos Brian) ,

The Job finished and service was live at 16:55... That's right the install took with a team of 5 people 9.5 Hours, now this was for a number of reasons and it was not from any lack of endeavor or effort  from the Chrous / Visonstream staff , but boy did it highlight some issues and costs involved with what should be a pretty standard install, I live in a fairly new area we have been in this p[lace since new and its only 15 years old but there was some major issues with getting the fibre through the trunking in a few places.

My hats off to the Boys doing the work, bloody tough work when they it doesn't go right and I will struggle to see how this is going to ramp up if these are going to be normal type problems, but this is a problem for the service companies to deal with and I think they themselves are well aware of the issues they are encountering, we had some fairly good discussions with them around this as well....

Photos are here, now we actually made a day of this so yes there are some Lazy people around just watching the work ... it was purely for scientific research I can assure you Tongue Out.

Photos live below as there are too many to post in the thread

Oh... just that your "Crusaders" banner mislead me... thinking that you're in Christchurch so I thought I can swing by for a demo of fibre.. alas. *lol*

presumably not a residential install if you have an account manager (or did you mean WxC's chorus account manager turned up to your residential install?)

What is the size of the internal Optical Network terminator box (ONT) ?

Do you have the option of powering it from a UPS for when you mains goes off?

Did they leave your copper connected?

Details man, we need details ........ :)

You have a very forgiving wife there... jackhammers breaking concrete, front verge being dug up - and it looked like the copper was used as drawstrings but I'm probably wrong.

What I like is that you had simple conduit through your garage into your kitchen, with what looks like a crowbar to break through the wall.... none of this nonsense of connecting to your 'comms rooms' and such but actually a house like most  NZ'ers will have.

5 blokes though... yeouch.... good to know WXC will be absorbing all those costs on behalf of connecting customers for no term contract, such a noble company.....!

Thanks,

Gak it needs an external power brick,

Thats fine if you have a utility cupboard/network hub to hide it in, but why not made something that you can stick on an internal wall next to a eithernet connection and a power socket and have nice short cords connecting it to your network/volts.

Not something that is going to be pulled apart by a roving 3 year old....

An internal PSU's would create more issues - it introduces a point of failure in the hardware, would make it bigger, hotter, and to use a UPS you'd require a 230V output to the device.

Yes it was residential install but fair to say Chorus probably have an interest in seeing how it went for us considering what we do in this space

My Wife is awesome and my pride and joy next to our SIP Network Innocent

Yes I wanted to see this as pretty standard install and the guys in the roof found some mouse eaten cable as well, so if it was going to have an issue it happened here in a pretty standard house really, so lots of interesting info observed

Were just good guys all round Antonios you know that Wink
