My laptop has recently experienced really slow upload speeds (~0.15Mbps) since changing to VDSL and getting a new modem. All of the laptops and desktops in my flat have the same problem. They are operating with windows 7,8 and 8.1. My android tablet however is fine and has a normal upload speed of ~10Mbps. When testing the speeds the upload quickly peaks to 5Mbps and then drops to virtually nothing by the end of the test.

I have already reinstalled and updated my wireless network driver, updated the firmware on the modem and have reset the modem. Not too sure what else there is to do.

The upload speed is fine when using ethernet, the problem is only when using wireless.

Test over LAN not wifi what is the upload like then and have you tried changing the WiFi channel?

If one device has normal speeds then fundamentally it can not be your internet connection.

Compare how the device that works well connects to your network against all those that do not. The difference is where the problem lies.

I have tried over LAN and the upload speed is fine, the problem is only when using wireless. I will try changing the channel and see if that works.

We are using the D'link DSL 2877AL modem-router. We have around 11 devices connected, but the problem still persists when there is only 1 device connected.

I'm not sure how to check the settings on my tablet, so I can't really compare them well unless there is something specific and I can try googling how to find it. There might be an app that is able to show the different settings?

I feel as though the problem is to do with the different operating systems, comparing android to windows. I'm just no t sure how to isolate the problem further and fix it.

the issue with be with your router

have you tried powering it off and seeing if its any better?

what about a factory reset, then set all the setting back up?

on the note of the tablet, you do need to consider the fact that the testing method is slightly different on the app compared to the desktop Flash application, this can often causes faster than expected results.

Change the router to a 20Mhz wireless channel. The tablet probably only does 20 and you are competing with a video sender or something that is not cooperative to wifi.

Launch the 'Manual Wireless Connection Setup' then under Wireless Basic settings, disable WMM.

Disabling WMM also disables IP QoS-related config which can cause slow uploads on Wi-Fi.

Have you tried a different channel yet?

If you are using 2.4Ghz, 1, 6 and 11 are the most popular channels to use (as they are non-overlapping).

Also note if you are using 2.4Ghz that if you have just one 802.11b client in the vicinity it will affect the performance of everything in the same channel. Sometimes you can mitigate this by disabling all the historic rates (so disable 1, 2, 5.5 and 11 Mb/s data rates). I tend to disable all the older rates as a matter of course.

I changed the channel width to 20MHz and the channel to channel 8. These settings didn't make any difference to the upload speed. I also disabled WMM which reduced both the upload speed and download speed to around 30% of the original, with the upload speed still falling to zero. Any other thoughts? Thanks to those who have replied.

Does your router support channel 13? As it made a big difference to speed for me. Only problem some devices don't support it.

I tried channel 13 but it didn't seem to make any difference, I changed it back to channel 8 incase some devices weren't able to connect to it. I did a speed test and recorded t to show what I mean by the spike in upload speed. https://www.dropbox.com/s/xf3xdxmx18hukov/Untitled%20102.avi?dl=0

Try channel 1, 6 or 11 as they are non-overlapping. Check whether anything else at your place could be interfering in the 2.4Ghz range eg wireless phones.

Time to find a new industry!
