to moderators: I'm not sure if this problem is related to router settings, or is a problem with our broadband. I've posted this in NZ Broadband, but it may belong in Networking>LAN.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello, we're currently scratching our heads trying to figure out why we're getting such poor internet performance for some of our devices, while it runs just fine on others. None of us are experts, so hoping we can get some insights here.

The problem:

Internet runs fine on the two Windows computers we're using. Terrible on iMac, iPad, iPhones, and also an Android smartphone.

  • Websites often timeout.
  • Certain apps (esp. games) just can't get through the loading screens (failing to connect, I assume?), or take a very long time (but work alright once 'connected', if it doesn't timeout). If using mobile data, the same loading screens take less than a second.
  • Can't use Netflix on iPad.

One of the computers running Windows is actually a macbook, and switching over to macOS sees an immediate change in internet performance (for the worse).

All the devices connected by WiFi, so I suspect this is where the problem lies. Sometimes they do manage to work ok, though still slower and less reliable than using mobile data.

Details:

We're with TrustPower, using VDSL. (residential naked unlimited VDSL). We've had this same problem since signing up (3 months or so now).

Using the router they supplied: NetComm Wireless NF10W. All devices connected by WiFi.

A master splitter has been installed by previous tenants of this apartment, I'm pretty certain. (has the socket labelled as 'VDSL', landlords not sure about this sort of thing).

We didn't have these problems at our last flat.

Here is a screenshot from the WiFi settings page: here.

What we've done so far:

  • Resetting the router provides relief to these problems, but they pop up again within the same day.
  • We've tried WiFi channels 1, 6 & 13. (it is a pretty crowded area?) Router says the interference is 'acceptable'.
    Image from 'WiFi Analyzer'
  • We've disabled QoS. I thought this fixed it, but the relief we had was probably just due to resetting.
  • TrustPower support has had us switching WiFi channels, but any success we've had there is also probably just from resetting.

We do have a large number of devices. At max, we have 3 smartphones, 3 computers & an iPad all using the WiFi. Still have problems when only four things connected, but maybe it's less pronounced--would need to test that more thoroughly somehow.

If there is any other info I can provide to help solve this one, let me know! Since one of us has recently transitioned to working from home, and using the iMac, we really need to solve this.

Thanks,

Pita

Give this a try.  Go to the DNS Proxy page under "Advanced" settings on the router.  Turn it off.  You'll need to disconnect/reconnect all your devices.  See how you go.

Also I'd suggest Channel 1 is a better choice, there is less interference there than on 6.

Hmm, forum seems to be stripping the closing </a> to my links, probably because I'm new here.

As ubergeek said, change to channel 1.

Other thing to try, is connect to the router via cable, and see if iMac behaves.

We've switched back to channel 1, and disabled DNS proxy. Everything seems to be working much better than usual right now. We'll give it a day just to make sure we're not experiencing the same usual temporary fix that resetting gives us, but first impression is that things are working MUCH better than usual (even after resetting).

Fingers crossed!

Not related to the issue you are having, but try increasing the DTIM interval to 3 or 4 (currently set at 1) - mobile devices like phones should use far less battery power when on standby.

Love it when people say they have lots of devices and then list an amount around 10 ;)

Anyway, the DNS proxy will be the issue. Its hopeless on netcomm gear. I had no end of problems when trying to use the routers DNS, running my own internal one and all problems went away with the long delays on resolution, pages loading with half the images not there and similar. I think it has some form of cache in its proxy that fills up or something.

Without using the DNS on them the netcomms seem pretty reliable as far as routers go.

for mac devices in particular, avoid channel 13.

My brother had a similar problem on trustpower VDSL using the NetComm supplied router. Ended up replacing the router (with everyone's favourite HG659) and he's happy as a a clam.

Not necessarily. When they wake, they check the country code being broadcast in beacons from visible access points to determine location - if they see NZ or other areas that use channel 13, it works fine.

Really? when did apple products start properly supporting channel 13?

Getting a bit OT, but I've never had an issue with channel 13 as such with Apple products - definitely seen the underlying issue though where they seem to be too smart for their own good, see APs broadcasting "US" in the beacon packets, decide they must be in the US (because everyone always configures the correct locale on an AP right?), and then refuse to see an AP on a non US channel (be it 12, 13, or one of the 5GHz ones).

Yup, I remember coming across this back in the day (circa 2003) where my iBook wouldn't use channel 13 if the AP country was set the the default US. I think a Mac will (or at least used to) set its Wifi country code and channel use based on the 802.11d country code set on the AP.

<offtopic>

They've been doing this for years, particularly in their MBP line (but probably their other ones too).

My issue is, a lot of people have random routers either imported from overseas and/or setup incorrectly with the wrong country codes. So if you have a congested area such as Auckland CBD, you're not gonna have a good time.

Oddly, it wasn't my Apple products that had an issue so much as it was the Nexus 6P. It would sometimes work, then others times not. In the end had to change my channel because everyone else around here haven't got it set correctly to NZ.

It would be nice if there was a more enforceable way to ensure it was accurately set.
