We have a couple of ISP specific HG659 threads

There also appears to be a thread on the OpenWRT forum

I'm personally interested in any hack/tweaks including

  • Cross flashing firmwares

    • BP / Spark / Vodafone firmwares appear to be interchangeable - but double check your hardware version
  • Shell Access - See BigPipe Thread
  • Using as an additional AP
  • Using as a VOIP device
  • Bridge mode - just operating as a VDSL modem
  • OpenWRT support

My ideal would be OpenWRT or LEDE support but I have a feeling that would break the VOIP support.

I'm currently running a device as an AP with DNS/DHCP turned off and connection via LAN Port.

  • BigPipe Firmware
  • Telnet access with Shell

Lack of a default route means I can't test VOIP support. Anyone else found a guide on setting a default route to match my existing firewall?

Tried on the command line, but it appears you can't drop a full root shell which restricts some of the commands when on the telnet console.

I don't know how widely known it is, but you can enable WAN packet mirroring at the following address:

Oh cool, never knew that. Does it work reliably though? Feels like an undocumented feature.

It's a shame these things are not accessible / discoverable from the main UI.

It worked well when I tried it. Instructions on how to enable it were provided to me by Huawei so I think it's legit, just undocumented.

So I've been trying to get this to work in bridge mode so it could act as a backup ADSL or VDSL modem. So far I've tried the BigPipe and Spark firmwares but I always get the following message

PPPoA can support only one PPP connection

Here are some of the guides from Vodafone and Spark

I've tried clean firmware uploads with a full factory reset, but no luck so far. I have a feeling there must be a additional connection defined somewhere on the device but I can't find it.

Dumping the config shows only a single WAN connection defined, and that PPPoE Bridged is a valid option for the connection type.

<WANPPPConnection NumberOfInstances="1">
<WANPPPConnectionInstance InstanceID="1" Enable="1" PossibleConnectionTypes="IP_Routed,PPPoE_Bridged,DHCP_Spoofed" ConnectionType="IP_Routed" X_HW_PPPoESession="" Name="" X_WanAlias="INTERNET_TR069_ADSL_0_100" AutoDisconnectTime="0" IdleDisconnectTime="0" NATEnabled="1" Username="user@xtrabb.co.nz" Password="dCbUtWQXEhV5Ic2hESH/Xg==" PPPAuthenticationProtocol="PAP" MaxMRUSize="1492" X_TCP_MSS="0" DNSEnabled="1" DNSOverrideAllowed="1" DNSServers="" MACAddress="" MACAddressOverride="0" PPPLCPEcho="20" PPPLCPEchoRetry="3" X_PPPRetryDialInterval="0" PPPoEACName="" PPPoEServiceName="" ConnectionTrigger="AlwaysOn" RouteProtocolRx="Off" X_InterfaceName="" X_LowerLayers="" X_ServiceList="INTERNET" X_Default="1" X_APN="" X_DialNumber="" X_IPv4Enable="1" X_IPv6Enable="0" X_IPv6AddressingType="SLAAC" X_IPv6DefaultGateway="" X_IPv6DNSEnabled="1" X_IPv6DNSOverrideAllowed="1" X_IPv6DNSServers="" X_IPv6Address="" X_IPv6PrefixLength="0" X_NATType="symmetric">
<X_DMZ DMZEnable="0" DMZHostIPAddress=""/>
</WANPPPConnectionInstance>
</WANPPPConnection>

Has anyone got one of these working in bridge mode where your router can connect back to the HG659 via PPPoE?
