Has anyone tried to do this with the HG556a? Am trying to link it to my asus dsl-n55u via ethernet to extend connection via wifi and use the ethernet ports on it. I have tried turning the DHCP off and setting the SSID and wireless settings the same as whats being broadcast on the asus but am having no luck, same with google which is where I found the aforementioned steps. Bit of a networking noob...

You might like to expand on the "...am having no luck". What is not happening? Did you get to the setup pages?

What IP numbers are used on your network and what is the IP number of the HG556?

Make sure the ethernet cable from the Asus is going into LAN1 on the hg556a.

Will have a look at that thread when I get home.

What's happening is I can get into both devices to change settings, but when I change the ip address of the Huawei I lose access to its settings page, I get two Wi-Fi ssids that are the same, the Asus one works but if I connect to the Huawei it just says no internet connection.

You haven't said what IP numbers you are using. I wanted to check both devices were on the same subnet and also no duplicates.

When you change the IP address.of your Huawei you'll probably need to reboot your ASUS so that it recognises the new address.

Also, ensure the DNS settings of the Huawei are pointing to the ASUS' LAN IP address.

I had a similar set up with my HG556a but I was running OpenWrt on it, and had to do the above, in addition to what has been mentioned already, to make it function as an AP.

Asus ip is 192.168.1.1
Huawei up is 192.168.1.250
Subnet mask are both 255.255.255.0
Huawei dns is Asus lan up 192.168.1.1

With that set up I get a failed to obtain ip address error. SSID, PW etc are all the same.

Followed the instructions in the posted threads and still am having no luck...

Is the Asus DHCP server enabled? Is the Huawei DHCP disabled??

That should just work, Ive used an old ADSL dlink as access point using more or less what youve setup

You could try another separate SSID on the Huawei
try another IP adress on the Huawei (clutching at straws now)
try a static IP on the laptops wifi adaptor (as a test)

It looks like DHCP isnt being passed through via wifi.
Who knows what weirdness is in the ISP's custom firmware on the Huawei.
ISPs routers dont allways work as expected

You need to prove that Asus DHCP (with Huawei out of circuit) is working and go from there.

How'd I go about that. I originally used the Asus as my modem router where it handled 3+ wireless devices and 2 wired devices, would assume that if it had no problem assigning ip addresses there it'd be working now?

to confirm Asus DHCP, plug something into it or connect something to its wifi.
Is a slight chance that, for some reason Asus DHCP may have auto disabled (eg if it thought the H's DHCP was still active)

Also , plug a laptop into a spare LAN port on the H & see if that works (its just 1 step in the testing process)

I am just going off of an old memory.

I recall I used the subnet 255.255.0.0 and set the HG556a default gateway to 192.168.2.1.

Set your DHCP on the Asus to use that subnet and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 (ASUS)

Might work?

Edit, Works in cisco packet tracer if that means anything haha....

And confirm that the devices are connected via the LAN ports rather than via the WAN port on Huawei.

So have made some progress, changed the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 and the other ip address suggestions above and now the Ethernet ports on the Huawei work and pass on the internet connection. I can also access both setting pages on each device by entering the relevant ip address now.

Wi-Fi is broadcasting from it but it asks me to reenter my password saying some settings have changed since last time and then won't connect saying cannot connect to network. When I try connect my phone it just say authentication error and asks to re enter my password. Password is correct, am on a different channel, Asus is 20/40mhz and Huawei is auto which i assume is the same thing both on 2.4ghz and have the same SSID. Passwords are correct and wpa2-psk and wpa2 personal with aes encryption

Not sure what's wrong now...
