Hoping someone can help with this problem I'm having.

 

 

Here's my home network to set the scene.

 

 

Spark VDSL using the HG659B. I'm not using an VPN or Smart DNS services and all settings on the HG659B are as per Sparks settings. The only change from standard is that Wifi is disabled on the router and LAN 1 passes to a switch and onto a UAP AC Pro for all wireless duties. I've had no issues with this set-up for the year I've been in this house.

 

 

Recently picked up an ATV 4K for the lounge room. This is connected directly to LAN 2 on the HG659B purely for convenience as they are right next to each other and away from the switch. This works fine for the most part but it randomly drops connection from the internet. When the ATV drops internet nothing else in the house is impacted. All other wired or wifi clients keep trucking along as if nothing has happened. Sometimes a simple reboot of the ATV will sort it and at other times I need to reboot the router then the ATV to get it working again.

 

 

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

Have you checked latest firmware on HG659b from Spark?

It appears I don't. Currently running B020, just obtained a copy of B022 which I'll load up tonight.

 

 

Thanks, will come back here if this doesn't resolve it.

A friend of mine has an ATV4 (not 4K), and just last week it started dropping off the network.

 

It was on Wifi, and when I went and had a look, I could see it connecting, getting an IP address, then disconnecting. About 4 times a minute.

 

Told him it was stuffed (after resetting it, changing WiFi channels, resetting router, changing between 2.4 and 5GHz). it is 3 weeks short of a year old, so he's taking it back to Leemings today. Hopefully they don't give him the run around...

 

 

 

Not exactly like the OPs issue (I didn't try his on a wired connection - didn't have a long enough cable), but similar.

I had checked that and no, I don't believe so. When it happened last night there were 12 devices connected.

 

I'll try the Firmware when I get home tonight and report back.

There's a limit of 16 devices per Wifi band on the 659, and behaviour after that is exceeded is indeterminate. Of course on a separate AP that shouldn't be an issue unless you may also be hitting a 32 device overall limit...

No dropouts since updating the firmware. Its only been a couple of days but they were occurring 3/4 times a day before so this is promising. Thanks @Linux for the advice.

OK, I'm back. And so are the constant dropouts. I now say constant as its pretty common for a dropout to occur after every YouTube video or Netflix episode. It will play all the way to the end of the current episode I'm watching and then when I go to start the next, nothing. Reboot of the ATV and/or the router required to get going again. Just like before, laptops and phones are not interrupted. It remains connected to the router with an IP address but no access to the internet. 

 

 

 

Any advice please, I'm at my wits end with this having just cancelled my SKY subscription and moved to streaming for all media services.

Has the ATV recently updated its iOS?  New versions came out a few days ago I think, and it will have installed automatically if you have that setting enabled..  Could be buggy.

I'd have to check, but it was playing up before the latest version was released last week so I don't think that is it.

Neither, ethernet. I've tried unplugging the ethernet cable and using 5Ghz wifi and it still drops out. The router and ATV are about 2 feet from each other.

It sounds like an ATV problem to me.  Maybe restore iOS to factory and see how it behaves.
