Current setup is a Asus DSL-Ac68u router (was on VDSL) this is now reconfigured and using port 4 as a WAN port. Speed tests are only getting 400Mbs and should reach 700-900.
Would swapping to a RT-AC68u help? Does the DSL side limit these routers? Should I get a different brand router? This router is not doing Wifi and both radios are off. I do like the Asus routers.

Pretty sure these routers are not powerful enough to route 1Gbps which is the exact result you're seeing.

Best router for Gigabit performance is the one that Vodafone supply.

yeah the ISP supplied router is actually pretty good at getting you the speeds you pay for.

I was on the same boat with my N55U and ended up using the one provided by ISP.

So is that the Vodafone Ultra Hub? They have not supplied one. If I have to purchase one I would rather purchase something like a Nighthawk X10 or similar. Ideas for non vodafone routers?

Given its not doing wifi just buy a Huawei HG659 off TM for $20. Or maybe an Edgerouter.

Honestly - do not waste your money on those sorts of routers. You're paying top dollar for a device that isn't worth that. Both the Asus and Netgear routers have rubbish routing performance for the price.

If you're needing a basic router that "just works" then the Huawei HG659. Otherwise ask Vodafone for one of their routers.

What are you needing from the Asus that the Huawei HG659 doesn't offer?

Hi, interesting response, but as has been suggested a Huawei off TM for $20 will with pretty much all certainty out perform your recommended candidates.

The folk commenting here do so from a reasonably established understanding of the matter, and work at many levels in both the IT network and ISP space.

The Asus has waaaaay more antenna and is like $600 so it must be better than the huawei thing.
Plus I heard Vodafone have backdoors in to huawei and the Chinese are snooping on them too.

OP: Usually the models with integrated modems have massively watered-down internals compared to the dedicated router models. I remember the DSL-N66U was a totally different router internally to the much superior RT-N66U. However I just looked it up and the DSL-AC68U basically is an RT-AC68U with a VDSL modem bolted on. They have the same chipset (BCM4708+2xBCM4360 @800MHz) and should be capable of the same routing performance, including routing gigabit with hardware offload enabled. Without hardware offload and doing all routing in software you would expect to see about 400Mbps, which is what you are getting.

You may be using features/settings that are incompatible with hardware offload (main offender is usually QoS). I'd try resetting the router to default settings, making sure hardware offload is on, establishing a bare connection and checking the speed. Then try building up to your previous config.

It depends on how you are connected.

You said you turned off Wifi, I would suggest edgerouter-x from ubnt. It's really cheap(just $100) but it has hardware offload(NAT) and can provide you with solid performance around 900Mbps. No Wifi, small size, POE support.

You can find the key parameters in their website

* 260 kpps for 64-byte packets
* 1 Gbps for 1518-byte packets

You can easily test your router using iperf3 and compare.

Using a small pc with Linux to act as a router is also an option. It's even faster than those hardware offload ones from my own test. I can get 950Mbps in iperf3 test via such a small machine(intel i3 cpu) and amazing packet forwarding speed.
