IcI:

Zeon: ... Just a quick note on 2degrees and IPv6, I had to run these commands to get it to actually work:

set interfaces ethernet eth0 vif 10 pppoe 0 ipv6 address autoconf
set interfaces ethernet eth0 vif 10 pppoe 0 ipv6 dup-addr-detect-transmits 1
set interfaces ethernet eth0 vif 10 pppoe 0 ipv6 enable

If only that would work on my USG

i'm upgrading to bigpipe 1000/500 in a few weeks and I'm computer savvy but not network savvy so i'm not sure if I'm setting this up right.

is there any difference between the ERL and ER-X for 1000/500? if no

will ufb > ER-X plugged into 3 computers and 4th port going into a HG659 which is plugged into a few more pcs/consoles work?

do I need to set HG659 into bridge mode? will that lower speeds?

Yes - if you're going with Gigabit UFB then get the Edgerouter Lite.

will ufb > ER-X plugged into 3 computers and 4th port going into a HG659 which is plugged into a few more pcs/consoles work?

Since we're talking about the Edgerouter Lite now you'll need a switch (an el-cheapo TP-Link Gigabit switch should do you fine).

do I need to set HG659 into bridge mode? will that lower speeds?

Disable DHCP, set its IP on one that doesn't conflict with anything else, plug it into a general Ethernet port (not WAN) and you're away.

Personally I'd recommend looking into either the Ubiquiti UniFi range (USG + UniFi Switch + UniFi Access Point) or even into the Grandstream range unless if you're specifically wanting to learn the Edgerouter.

What's the setup like for the USG? I was leaning towards edgerouter since your tutorial makes it look super easy to setup.

1) Get a login to the controller (link in my signature).
2) Setup basic internet access on the USG via the web interface.
3) Run an adoption to the controller.
4) Configure the rest from a nice web interface.

Grab a UniFi Access Point (UniFi AC Lite-LR) as well as a UniFi Switch and you can see your entire network in one control panel.

Hi Michael

Great tutorial, it worked a treat - the first time!

Long story short, a week after I got my VF fibre connection up and running via my Edgerouter X, Chorus decided that rather than give another tenant in our building their own fibre connection, they would just transfer ours to them!

Now that's all been sorted out, (they fixed it but forgot to tell me they had moved my connection from ONT Lan1 to Lan3).

But, now, with a firmware update on the ER-X, and you changing your tutorial slightly (I'm guessing there were bugfixes in firmware?) the standard PPPoE connection to Vodafone fibre doesn't work anymore.

It doesn't seem to pull in an IP address and the PPPoE0 interface always shows as disconnected.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Andrew

I thought Vodafone had moved to IPoE for their whole stack? Maybe give that a go?

That did the job thanks.

Our business account manager assured me that it was a PPPoE connection, and even gave me our username and password.

Cheers

New alpha release 1.10.0-alpha.3 is available here:

Only available to registered Ubiquiti Forum users
I've been running alpha1 since it came out with no issue

[UPDATE}
I've just updated to Alpha3 no issues to report thus far.

[Release Notes v1.10.0-alpha.3]

Changelog

Changes since v1.10.0-alpha.2

New features:

  • [FlowAccounting] - Added flow-accounting via ipt-netflow which performs better (+25% max throughput) comparing to original pmacct netflow implementation. This ipt-netflow can be configured in CLI with set system flow-accounting-ipt ...

Enhancements and bug fixes:

  • [System] - coredumps will not be generated anymore unless explicitly enabled with "set system coredump enabled"
  • [LoadBalancing] - Fixed wrong state of pppoe interface after boot. Discussed here
  • [SshRecovery] - added listening interfaces. Discussed here
  • [SshRecovery] - Fixed bug when ssh-recovery failed to start after doing factory reset.
  • [Upgrade] - Fixed bug when hostname was not correct during first boot after upgrade
  • [OSPF] - Fixed regression in 1.10.0-alpha.1 when OSPF md5 authentication could not be configured. Discussed here
  • [Config] - Fixed regression in 1.10.0-alpha.1 when random routing protocol configuration failed during commit.
  • [VLAN] - Fixed bug when commit failed while deleting disabled VLAN interface. Discussed here
  • [System] - Fixed random bug when "ubnt-cfgd" process was causing zombie-apocalypse on ER by spawning huge army of immortal child zombie processes Devil
  • [Offloading] - Removed spurious warning messages from Cavium offload module when handling IPSec traffic
  • [Offloading] - Fixed bug in PPPoE offloading when packets with incorrect IP checksum caused corrupted downloads (this fix works on all models except ER-Infinity/ER-4/ER-6). Discussed here
  • [Offloading] - Fixed regression in 1.10.0-alpha.1 when PPPoE offloading was causing packet forwarding issues on ER-Infinity.
  • [Kernel] - Fixed bug when ER randomly rebooted on Cavium-based routers. Discussed here and here and many other threads on forum.

Known issues:

  • If WAN interface has custom MAC address then DHCP client will fail to acquire address on WAN interface. Workaround is to disable ssh-recovery (set service ssh-recovery disabled)
  • VLAN traffic is not being offloaded on Cavium-based routers (that's all ER routers except ER-X, ER-X-SFP, and EP-R6). This regression appeared in 1.10.0-alpha.1 and it affects all types of VLAN traffic (VLAN-to-VLAN and VLAN-to-Non-VLAN). This issue was first reported here

Not at all. It is still DHCP.

Just spotted this, for Registered Ubiquiti Forum members only
So new not tried it yet.

New alpha release 1.10.0-beta.1 is available here:

Note: The ER-X/ER-X-SFP/EP-R6 has more limited storage, and in some cases, an upgrade may fail due to not enough space. If this happens, remove the old backup image first (using "delete system image" command, see here for more details) before doing an upgrade.

More details can be found in the release notes below. Please give it a try if you are interested in the new features/changes to help us test them so that we can get the release out sooner! Thanks very much!

[Release Notes v1.10.0-beta.1]

Changelog

Changes since v1.10.0-alpha.3

New features:

  • [Iperf] - Added iperf 2.0.3 which will be used by UNMS to measure bandwidth towards AirMAX devices
  • [Ubnt-discover] - Add CLI command to disable "ubnt-discovery" daemon, thus ER will stop responding to discovery messages on 10001 UDP port. (set service ubnt-discover-server disable). Discussed here

Enhancements and bug fixes:

  • [SshRecovery] - Fix bug when custom MAC address was not properly set if "ssh-recovery" was enabled. Discussed here
  • [SshRecovery] - Fix bug when non-admin user was not able to configure "ss-recovery". Discussed here
  • [L2tpv3] - Fix bug when l2tpv3 interface could not be added to bridge
  • [Switch] - Fix bug when last interface could not be removed from switch via GUI
  • [Switch] - Fix bug when address could be assigned to interface which is assigned to switch
  • [SNMP] - Move snmp cache from flash storage to tmpfs
  • [OSPF] - Fix regression in 1.10.0-alpha.3 when OSPF "passive-interface default" did not work. Discussed here
  • [Static] - Fix regression in 1.10.0-alpha.1 when committing disabled static router failed. Discussed here
  • [Interface] - Fix regression in 1.10.0-alpha.1 when committing interface bandwidth failed. Discussed here
  • [Routing] - Fix regression in 1.10.0-alpha.1 when default gateway via PPPoE interface was randomly not set during boot. Discussed here
  • [DHCP] - Fix bug when 2nd DHCP client could not receive address from DHCP server if IPv4 offloading was enabled.
