well the POMs/UKers say it wrong.. they say rooter.. which sounds very lame and rude
cos its route (french word I believe) with a R on the end

just have to watch the UK the gadget show and wait for a item to show up

most people say rout -ter

except the ou in french would be pronounced as oo

e.g. boulangerie (boo-lan - jer -ee) or ecouter (eh koo tay)

Rooter at home and rowter at work. It's because youse use "root" to mean something rude and not the beginning or origin (or top level node). It gets confusing when rooting phones.

I also pronounce Holden as "Vauxhall" :P

I read it to myself as "rooter" (after all, it handles routes) but as someone noted above I tend to wimp out and say "modem" if it has one.

Now, at the risk of derailing the thread, I learned "matrix" as "mat-rix", not "may-trix"!

As much as I would like to not pronounce it in the American way I cant get past the fact it just sounds rude pronouncing it rooter.

But then I would say the root (route) to there if I was talking traffic... hmm inconsistent...

BTW I hate people referring to the letter Z as Zee - Good on that now defunct kiwi music group and the energy company keeping Zed alive.

And while I start to rant - why cant people refer to a toilet as a toilet - There are no bloody baths in the 'bathroom' - I always correct the women at work who insist on referring to the 'bathroom'.

There are at least 2 type of routers, spelt the same but they seem to be pronounced differently

There is the one you use for timber eg http://www.woodworkbasics.com/image-files/router.jpg . This is pronounced row - ter

Then there is the one for computers, which is pronounced in NZ as root - er . Which sounds a little rude.

I prefer the sound of row - ter

You could also call it the "crapper" after Thomas Crapper, the man hailed for making flush toilets popular - perhaps that's too English!

That reminds me of a Nortel network talk I went to about 1999 when a guy from Nortel UK was doing the presentation and kept on referring to the "office rooter" and after a while wondered why the chuckles from some present. It was explained to him that in NZ the "office rooter" was the guy who was having it off with the office girls and it was generally call the "office rowter" in NZ..

I seem to remember this discussion here about a year ago..
