what happens when you remove all the switches not required to run these two laptops connecting via ethernet to use VPN?

Hi.  I haven't tried this but if it was a hardware issue then wouldn't my network connectivity via Ethernet be affected full stop, despite whether or not I am also using VPN?

Have you tried also disabling WiFi on the laptop when connected on LAN? Possibly when you are connecting via LAN to VPN, laptop switches to WiFi for internet access, which then drops the LAN VPN.
With WiFi off, it can only connect via LAN.

Similar would not apply for when on WiFi as one assumes you are not plugged into LAN for that scenario.
