What does the TV say about the connection?

I get a message that it connected to the network but was unable to get internet quite often from the chromecast, it then pops up its chromecast2100 network briefly, then reconnects to wifi and decides it is ready to cast.

All this because $35 isnt enough for a damn RJ45 socket.

Yeah, it does seem that way, although using my PC for casting is rock-solid.

Google Play wants me to log-in to get the App, and even after doing so it now seems to want me to have the Google account (meaning email) set up on the tablet as well! I'll try that later today.

Weird stuf, and as you say, an RJ45 port would have been brilliant.

Wait a minute. It's a Google device and it can be controlled from Chrome or an Android tablet/smartphone.

To download the Chromecast app for Android you need to use Google Play. You must have a Google account to use Google Play to download this AND ANY OTHER app.

I don't understand why is this a problem now. It's a requirement for the device to work. If you are not happy with the requirement then you can use it with Chrome only.

It says (incorrectly) I don't have a "device", or "a matching account on this device" ... which is confusing and unhelpful i think.

Only unhappy in the sense that it is taking time to sort, not about to start a revolution. And yes, works fine casting from Chrome browser using any other device /PC.

OK, I give up ... log into Google, set up Google/Gmail on tablet and logged in, can occassionaly see Chromecast in wifi list, go to Google Play.

Try to download/install Chromecast, keeps telling me I don't have a device OR I haven't logged into my Google account.

Since this persists, and the wifi connection to the device is so variable, I'm assuming the tablet is suspect here.

Try going into the Play store via a PC and list up your devices and see if that way you can install it.

Rickles, note that Google Play store WON'T tell you if you have a Chromecast or not. This is what the Chromecast app is for.

Can you install anything else from the Google Play store?

Have you tried going to https://play.google.com/store, searching for Chromecast app there and sending to your tablet?

Some more research shows that the tablet is not Google Play/Store 'compatible' ... why not, I have no idea.

Nextbook tablets used the GetJar store for apps, but that no longer has a presence, so ....

There you go. It's probably a chinese knock off. Those don't have Google Play.

You can always get the Chromecast from other sources such as http://www.1mobile.com/chromecast-878992.html.

You can get apps from Amazon Android store or 1mobile

Thanks Mauricio, the app did download and install from 1mobile.

However, it doesn't seem to have any sort of expected interface ... it appears more like the browser tab casting extension?

The Chromecast app just configures the Chromecast. You need apps that can "talk" to it - YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Pandora.

Open YouTube to test it for example.

No go on anything ... flaky connection to the device, neither YouTube or TV On Demand does anything but play on the tablet itself.

Given the whole thing up as a bad debt and enjoying a large gin and tonic to soothe the fevered brow.

Casting from PC/browser still works a treat, and if I recall correctly access using the App on a smart 'phone still works fine too.

[Now, what about porting Android onto that spare ASUS EeePC netbook I have lying about]

When you play a YouTube video on your device you have to tap the CAST icon below the video.

They must be on the same network.

Make sure there's no interference - WiFi performance is affected by other networks, too many devices, microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc, etc...
