Yes. 65Mb/s is full speed for single chain 20MHz 802.11n. To go faster both ends need multiple radio chains (MIMO) and / or wide radio channels (40MHz).

72MB/s if you engage short guard interval :)

I had a similar problem upgrading to Windows 8, except mine was on the same device. Mine was to do with Windows 8 driver automatically choosing to use 40 MHz bandwidth which turned out to include a more unstable channel at 2.4 GHz, set the router back to 20 MHz and it's fine again. Although ideally there would be a setting in Windows 8 for that as it doesn't seem to allow you to use third-party config utility?

Because they have either multiple radio chains, use a wide radio band or a short guard interval. Most likely is multiple radio chains.

Basically, it is a hardware limitation.

MsMelon: Hi everyone - I've just registered to geekzone as I've come across an issue I have been unable to google for a solution (the horror!!)

So I've just bought a new ASUS R750J notebook from PB Tech - yay boxing day sales! - and took it to my friend's place to fiddle around with and familiarise with the newfangled Windows 8. Everything went well, the laptop connected with his wifi with no problems.

I was very excited to start playing with it when I got it home but quickly noticed the significant lag that happened while surfing simple websites (nzherald, facebook, email, etc). Sometimes Chrome will say that the page can't load at all, and I need to refresh again. Simple online streaming of TV shows became a nightmare of buffering and Steam took ages to download Age of Empires II!

The thing is, my old Dell laptop has none of these problems - its download speed and upload speed are both faster, in the same room.

Please, if anyone has come across such an issue and found a solution (I reckon it's something to do with the Asus laptop's wireless adaptor), please reply and suggest something to do about it. This is ridiculously slow :(

will tell you my experience. my new tablet is suffering ridiculously slow lag, some pages won't even load (yes dell, not some dodgy places) ... turned windows defender to check (you must turn off both real time and the app, two check boxes) and everything is now lightning fast.

am installing avast only selecting file and web shield, turning on only file shield (turn on web shield and things go slow again)

Edit: take that back just realised when i reinstalled my wifi drivers i have not manually reentered my DNS ... so i don;t now how much impact windows defender has ...

Thanks to everyone that answered! It's both comforting and rather distressing how there can be so many reasons why this issue is happening. I just got home from 13 hours of work and am literally just staring at the screen with a blank look haha.

I'm not usually so terrible with playing around with the settings on a computer but windows 8 has stumped me quite a bit - not sure where to begin!!

I think the antivirus included on this notebook is McAfee, if that's worth noting. Goodness knows how to turn it off, let alone do the other things you guys recommended! Sorry >.<;;

Maybe I should just get someone to come have a look at it... I just wanted a new laptop that did everything my old one did, but better! T_T
