Hi everyone - I've just registered to geekzone as I've come across an issue I have been unable to google for a solution (the horror!!)

So I've just bought a new ASUS R750J notebook from PB Tech - yay boxing day sales! - and took it to my friend's place to fiddle around with and familiarise with the newfangled Windows 8. Everything went well, the laptop connected with his wifi with no problems.

I was very excited to start playing with it when I got it home but quickly noticed the significant lag that happened while surfing simple websites (nzherald, facebook, email, etc). Sometimes Chrome will say that the page can't load at all, and I need to refresh again. Simple online streaming of TV shows became a nightmare of buffering and Steam took ages to download Age of Empires II!

The thing is, my old Dell laptop has none of these problems - its download speed and upload speed are both faster, in the same room.

Please, if anyone has come across such an issue and found a solution (I reckon it's something to do with the Asus laptop's wireless adaptor), please reply and suggest something to do about it. This is ridiculously slow :(

Maybe you have to enter your dns manually.

Some routers dont do it properly with windows 8.1

First of all welcome to Geekzone!

So are you saying that your new laptop connected to your friend's wifi at normal fast speeds but when you got home and connected it to your WiFi, speeds dropped?

Yes, the new laptop was streaming tv shows easily while connected to my friend's wifi so I assume the speed was ok (didn't do any tests). No, I haven't hit my monthly cap.

I'm afraid I don't know very much about the technical aspects of this, so forgive me - what is dns? And how do I enter it?

And I'm assuming the first speedtest is done on the old laptop when you said speeds were fine, and the second speedtest was done on your new laptop?

So two PCs in the same room are getting different throughput. There are many potential reasons for such differences but drivers and configuration are the two most common sources. It is difficult to compare two wireless signals because each can be affected by wireless signals from other devices within range of your PCs or the router.

And have you tried plugging the new laptop directly into the modem via an Ethernet cable to see what speeds you get there?

Few of these laptops have really bad generic drivers, my cousins one fixed allegedly fixed itself when updating to 8.1 however I think it's more likely it was the wireless driver/chipset driver update he did at the same time after the fact. Note though that there are different models of N750JV and yours might not have the Centrino wireless chipset. Especially how the Asus website stated that it had a Atheros chipset (when the model he used clearly did not)

I think there is more than one thing going on

Ridiculously slow but reliable suggests your browsing is being filtered by a web scanning software aka antivirus

Hard to explain why your connection down speed is less than half of the Dell. 6Mbps is still very very fast for just browsing in general. Won't be ridiculously slow

To see if your bad drivers are causing poor connection speed

Right click on the wifi icon bottom select open network and sharing centre
Left click on the wifi connection name
A pop up window will tell you your connection speed. What is it?

Is it me or are many new Haswell laptops suffering slow wifi issues?

I know the Mac Air 2013 initially had issues, as well as the Sony Vaio line.

I have a baytrail tablet brand new supposedly N wifi ... Only connects at 65 Mbps! Is thAt normal for N wifi card? Any tweaking deops it to 24 Mbps!

Yes. 65Mb/s is full speed for single chain 20MHz 802.11n. To go faster both ends need multiple radio chains (MIMO) and / or wide radio channels (40MHz).

Some good points in the previous replies.

First thing is to hit Windows Update and the ASUS Update utility to see if there's anything there for your laptop.

After all is updated make sure you're testing in a "clean" environment. WiFi suffers of interference if there are other networks around. Make sure all other WiFi users around your place have it turned off before testing and make sure there is no one using cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc around during the test.

I assume those two screen shots are from around the same time? If not then you will need to test one just after the other because different days may have different results depending on DSL service.

When running speedtests use the same server in all tests as different servers are connected in different ways and may impact results.

I see you are on TelstraClear. Use the TelstraClear speedtest and select the location closest to you. Selecting another ISP (one of the tests shows Orcon servers) will most likely mask results.

What antivirus is installed on this new laptop?
