I've also looked in the Security Options under Local Security Policy and tried changing as per here:

That reminded me of something, on the XP machine (the computer hosting the shares):
Start > Run > secpol.msc > Local Policies > Security Options

In that screen find "Accounts: Guest account status" and make sure it is set to Enabled.
You may need to restart.

The "enable guest account" setting in User Accounts only hides/unhides from the Welcome screen.

Have you tried specifically adding 'Guest' account to your shared folders? (I know, you probably have..)

That was the next thing I was going to try, and I will tomorrow. Thanks for the idea :)

I guess what bugs me is (as I said) this all worked perfectly for ages, I'm starting to wonder if they did anything while my computer was in for service (I hope not).

Update - I *think* I've fixed it. I activated the Guest account, tried again, no go. Removed the password from the Guest account and it worked! Deactivated the Guest account and it's all working again. No clue what happened there...but at least it's working now.

I know Windows updates can be super invasive sometimes. The most likely scenario I could think of is a Windows update patch applied to either machine, either win 7 which didn't allow authenticate as guest, or when you restarted your xp machine likewise it applied an update which updates the guest permissions? I was going to suggest a system restore next to when it last worked.
