By the way, to give you guys an idea of just how monumental of an improvement my router was, here is a ping test from prior to the install:



And here is how things are looking post-upgrade:



Also, I just realized the tests weren't to the same server. Either way, the results were reproducible for both setups, it should still be a nice reference.

(BBCode seems to be really messed up. Supposedly I'm not supposed to be able to post links at all since I'm new here, but it let me anyways. Regardless, it isn't properly closing the tags for whatever reason.)

Great news! The tenants and landlord are all game for improving the connection and upgrading to VDSL at some point. I also managed to find the ADSL connection credentials!

I'd love to do a full bridge, although I'm not sure if Slingshot's ADSL works with PPPoE. It's set with PPPoA right now, which means I'll probably have to do a half-bridge. *sigh* Better than the current setup, though!

Will you be able to get a good VDSL connection?
What is your ADSL downstream attenuation?
Will even a good VDSL connection be enough for 17 people? I doubt it.
Is fiber an option? It's ideal for multiple users.
Whatever you get, you MUST have an unlimited data allowance - think about all the arguments otherwise :)

I'm not sure if the VDSL connection would be good, but I'd sure hope so.

The downstream attenuation is currently 14.5 dB.

VDSL probably wouldn't be optimal, although it would be better than what's set up now. UFB is not available here yet, unfortunately.

We're definitely sticking with unlimited plans. The last thing we need is a huge building being throttled, or a massive spike to monthly expenses.

vdsl will be about 20~30/5~10 there with that attenuation assuming internal wiring is not killing it.

simply be aware, your extremely borderline, if not just over. so it wont be great.

Presuming that you can get VDSL - after rewiring and master filters etc - two connections might just be enough for 17 people.
I once ran an office with 20 seats/PCs on two (good) VDSL connections in central Auckland, but the Internet was still pretty borderline.

Rule of thumb - if it's over 10.8dB, then you're out of luck.

Worth asking for a pre-qual check just in case though.

If you're only getting 0.6Mb/s upstream with 14dB attenuation down, you most likely have some sort of internal wiring issue. Best make sure that you get a master filter installed - this is usually part of a VDSL install, but should give you some improvement on ADSL as well.

assumption on upstream possibly pointing towards a internal fault i jumped to aswell.

is the limit actually still 10.8dB though, recently there has been so many lines WELL over that have got through. (well over, i see as clearly giving leway for the fact that the figure is with their tool rather than CPE)

as i said, within reason of measurements.

the 10.8db measurement is meant to be with their testing tool too, which has been noted to measure at a slightly different frequency. 


exactly on his internal wiring, the slower upload does support the possibility of dodgy wiring too.

What sort of upload speed should I be aiming for? The attainable line rate is only 916 Kbps, and I can get rather close to that if there's absolutely nothing else bogging down the connection. With such a scarce upstream, though, even a small handful of devices can significantly impact the perceived performance.
