FineWine: I live in Tauranga and I have just ordered my upgrade (Monday 18/8) to a Spark 30/10 plan. It's for a back section down a approx 25mtr concrete drive. The present copper I am presuming is conduited under this drive cause that is what pops up on the outside garage wall into a nice 4"x4" grey box. My question are: 1 - Does the modem have to go into the ONT box? or can the modem be somewhere else in the house cabled between? 2 - Does the ONT box require power if you are not placing the modem inside it? At present there are two exsisting phone points: one in master bedroom and one in kitchen. I am running an extension from the master bedroom into a second bedroom now an office for the present Spark ADSL modem. I understand this exsisting copper will still be used for the phone and the UFB on separate cables. What I would like to do is cable (not Apple WiFi network as at present) the PVR and Smart TV and cable my computer in the office. Where would the best place be for the ONT box and/or the modem? If the ONT box is placed on the inside wall of the garage and does not require power and then a cable run to the modem within the premises at whose cost is the cabling within the premises? Can I run three cables of the Spark modem for the PVR & Smart TV & office computer. Cheers

As your in tauranga the Local Fibre Company is Ultra Fast Fibre and not Chorus therefore the conduiting down your driveway wont be used by UFF as its not theirs.

Yes the ONT requires power - it is a compltely seperate device from the router (RGW) but is about the same size as a router ( Dont get confused with a Network Hub BOX which could house the ONT, Router and some network equipment inside )

You can place your RGW anyware you like but you will have to have Cat5e or better cableing run between the ONT and RGW if you dont have it already

- with a Spark UFB connection at present your phone line will not be cut over to work over the fibre but it the futre it will be and the copper line disconnected.

- the standard Spark Router has 4 network ports on it - if your need more than that you will have to add and additional 'Switch' to expand your connections

What is a "RGW"? I presume it is the modem.

If the ONT box is mounted on the wall directly inside the garage from the outside box then a power supply will have to be installed as that is the only wall in the garage without a power point. Who pays for that power point installation?

I would like them to run a cat cable from the ONT/modem to the office as well as the lounge room where the smart PVR & TV are. This would mean running through the roof space (which is accessible) then down the respective walls and install wall plates. The office and lounge already have power points (the lounge has TV point as well) coming down from the roof space. Who pays for this?

It is your responsibility to install power for hardware.

You can arrange for internal network cabling to be run at the time of the install at your cost. This can be arranged with your RSP.

Can't speak for UFF but Chorus don't require the ONT to be on the garage wall. Mine was cabled free to an internal store area where power was available. This entailed approx 20 metres of conduit for the fibre cable.

My RGW (residential gateway or modem!) is next to the ONT but it can be anywhere connected by an ethernet cable. This ethernet cabling would be your responsibility.

As I said, I can't speak for UFF, but there is a good chance they will place the ONT where you want it at no charge to you.

1. Your modem has to be connected to the ONT but the modem doesn't have to be right next to the ONT. I had the ONT installed right next to a patch cabinet in my garage so that I could plug the ethernet cable from the ONT directly into a port that routes up to my home office. I then ran an ethernet cable from the port in the office into the WAN port of the modem and it works great.

2. The ONT box is similar to modem and requires power. The installers usually will just put the ONT where your current modem is as there will already be power there, but they seem to be happy to put it somewhere else if the access is not restricted. Installation of a power point in a location would be at your cost. The contractor wall mounted my ONT box in a plastic case which is kind of chunky and ugly so I'm glad its in the garage and not in the house. Re the question about the phone line, as InstallerUFB pointed out, the phone line will remain separate from the fibre until Spark move solely to VOIP which will likely be several years away given the number of people who will not want to move to fibre. The Spark provided Huawei modem has 4 ports so you could run cables from the model to your PVR, Smart TV, and computer and turn on Wifi for your other devices. Or if you have more devices, buy a switch so you can get more direct connections.

The RGW is your network router that is normaly supplied by your ISP / In The ADSL world you have a device that is both a modem and a router - the modem half communicates with the exchange/cabinet equipement and then hands the connection over (internaly) to the router part of the device that communicates with your computer etc (this device is quite commonly just called just an ADSL modem) / In the UFB world the ONT sort takes the place of the modem and the RGW is the router side of things and they are two seperate devices that need to be connected together.

The ONT can be installed anyware (within reason) there is power and a way of cableing it back to the outside (there are limits on location & length of cabling that the Fibre company will provide for free) - it is up to supply the power

Any additional cableing that you would need to hook your RGW back to the ONT ( if they arent going to be in the same place) and from the RGW to any devices is up to for costs -

Had the surveyor out today; from street to the side of house is a straight run under the concrete driveway of 37.5 mtr's to the ENT. Then up the outside into the roof space under the eves then across the ceiling space to drop down into a wardrobe where the ONT box will be mounted. This wardrobe is located centrally in the house. It services an office/bedroom but more importantly on the other side of the wardrobe wall is the lounge room TV outlet and power point. So one Cat6 cable can run down the inside of the wardrobe poke through to the TV outlet which I will put a double outlet plate (TV point and Cat6 point) and another Cat6 cable can come into the office.

The only difficultly is I have to install a 240v double power point. This I could do myself

by connecting into the back of the existing power point in the lounge room and poke it through to the wardrobe and conduit it up to the ONT box high in the wardrobe.

Questions:

1 - can I run the Cat6 cable and the power cable in the same conduit without any signal degradation?

I would like to have the Gateway (modem) next to my computer not in the wardrobe and as I now have two Huawei HG630b Spark modems can I:
2 - run the two modems off the ONT - one for in the office for the computer and one connected to the lounge room outlet to connect my smart PVR & TV?

This way everything is hard wired and not wireless.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

1 - OK so it is side by side conduits then.

2 - MMMM will they then provide and place the ONT and modem in an appropriate size cabinet in the wardrobe or will I have to provide that or, say, install a shelf to sit the modem on?

3 - can the double power point be mounted inside the cabinet if that is the way to go?

1. find out what the minimum spacing is for the cables before you put them in

2. no you provide the cabinet, you can have the ONT in the cupboard and run 1or2 cat 5/6 cables to where the modem is then run cables from the modem to where you need them. its probably easier in your case if the office and tv back onto the cupboard to just have the modem in their as well and just run cables to the other rooms.

3. yes it can be mounted in the cabinet, generally at the bottom and the fiber/Ethernet comes in the side/top

The ONT can be fixed to the wall, may need a shelf or some way to affix the modem. You don't need a cabinet, at least initially.

With the hg630 next to the ONT in the wardrobe, send the Cat6 cables from the rear LAN ports out to the tv area and office. Would be better to send two cables to each location, imagine one for TV and one for a future games console or similar.

For the office, one for the PC and one spare for the future VoIP line.

If in the future you require cabling to additional rooms, a patch panel in the wardrobe, possibly all in a cabinet.

Sounds similar to what I have planned, except in a wardrobe instead of the garage. Where to put the ONT?

So can I run the power conduit and Cat6 conduit side by side down the wall? or is there a regulated distance between and if so what is that distance?

Thank you for that, very helpful. So they must be in conduit of minimum size of 16x25 and separated by a minimum distance of 50mm for a maxium distance of 3 metres. If any longer distance the separation must be 300mm. In my case it is well under 3 metres.

Also, to be legal and covered by insurance, if I install the double power outlet myself I will need a COC (certificate of compliance), any idea how much that would cost in the Tauranga area or would it be cheaper/just as quick to get an electrician in to do the work, if so what do they charge these days?
