Some of the Powerline manufactueres specifically address the question of crossing the phases, e.g. TPLink

Q: Can TP-LINK powerline adapters work in different phases of three-phase circuit?

A: Yes, but its rate will be affected when crossing the phases. For three-phase four-line circuit, we suggest you use the topology below to get good performance.

There are specific products that are designed to connect to three-phase bus bars, e.g. devolo.

Behodar: Interesting. Granted I don't know much about power wiring; I just know that each house doesn't have its own independent pair like with phone wiring so I wondered what stops the signal from getting back out to the lines in the street. It seems that the answer is "not much"! :)

The transformer out on the street will filter out the powerline signal going between houses - except in NZ where we have 240v, one transformer may serve multiple houses. In the USA, many houses have their own transformer.

But then the encryption can be used as a backup. Its much like wifi encryption - just push the button. different brands are compatible with each other, but its best to get the same model for all units in the house as the method of joining a unit to a network may vary. The newer units all have a simple push-button method to join or extend a powerline network.

If you have different phases coming into the house, it wont work - you will need a cross-phase coupler which makes powerline start to sound like more work than its worth.

I am a great fan of powerline networking - its wonderful.
But please remember its limitations - its radio over powerline wires.
That means it can pick up interference.

So if you are running any kind of old database application like MYOB where your entire homebusiness data is kept in the one file, on another computer, and you access it over a powerline or wifi connection, it may get corrupted in tranzit.

Ethernet is always best, powerline is second best but has the advantage of being fast and easy to set up - especially when connecting garages and sleepouts to the house.
