kandjc:
1 other different model HP laptop with Win 10 / Android Tablet and Android phone, connect with no problems.
Thanks.

that would point more to the laptop being the cause of the issue then.

Testing
turn OFF power save, hibernate, sleep etc
download & install new drivers from HP, look for bios updates as well
turn on power save on the laptops wifi device itself (in device manager)
try the laptop further away from router than 60cm (see above) . Is the wifi router at the same height as the laptop, arials pointing up ?
try the laptop somewhere else in the room.
Dont have the wifi router on the floor , try it at desk height
Turn OFF any cordless phones , BT devices, wireless kb/mice, av sender units, repeaters

actually, the easiest test will be to buy a $30 USB wifi dongle & try that in the laptop & see if that solves the issue (turn off the onboard wifi)

I have seen this behaviour 3 times with HP notebooks, all three were a result of over heating.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Mine (windows 10) disconnected and had issues reconnecting for a few days...
Every since I rolled my driver back to a previous version - it has been all good from that point.
