From what I have read about the ruckus zoneflex range. They are awesome. There was some video I watched of some guy in the states with 30 ipads streaming off a single AP. He said they could put the ruckus in the next room over and run the same test and it was more successful than a lot of other vendors.

I will probably buy an Xclaim Xi-3 (or 2) at the end of the year once my house is built.... im hoping for october. But for now I got a Unifi AP the range is good enough for me and no you don't need that control software running all day every day. I am holding off to see if any new gear comes out before the end of the year. Hopefully by then come down OR mean better gear will hopefully be available.

A lot of 2nd hand Ruckus kit appears on eBay for pretty good prices. Assuming you only want 1-2 AP's you can simply run them standalone without the requirement for a controller, and can set a lot of features such as roaming/band steering from the CLI via SSH as they not accessible in the GUI as ultimately Ruckus want you to buy a controller.

I didn't say UBNT Kit is enterprise or that it gets close to touching other vendors such as Ruckus because it doesn't. Having an "enterprise" price point or brand doesn't necessarily make a product better though either - I'm still extremely disappointed in Aerohive for example. The product has fantastic capabilities but is still let down by very average wireless performance.

People who buy Aerohive tend to buy it for its controllerless architecture, RBAC, layer seven firewalls, excellent cloud management and Private PSK functionality - no captive portals :-)

Ruckus need to spend more time on their management as the access points are excellent and the controller/management average.  This is one of the major reasons why the number of educational Ruckus deployments has dropped off over the last two years or so.  The other vendors are able to counter Ruckus' performance advantage with functionality.

The extra money covers better quality radios and features like multi-thread processing of data and RX-SOP.  I don't believe that all enterprise vendors are worth the money they charge but you can't sell an enterprise quality access point(which is what Ubiquiti claim in their advertising and stamp on their boxes) for $275.

Every solution ever built had to offer a compromise in one form or another. Building a solution based on price will always be a bad idea. You should be telling that to the people who think a few Pico's can adequately cover a camping ground with a few hundred sites, not somebody like me who already understands that. The real world reality however is that using Ruckus kit everywhere is simply not possible for the same reason everybody can't own a Ferrari.

Ubiquiti is definitely designed for a price point.  Their business model is to sell in the SME market with low margins and high turnover.

I used to work in that section of the market so I know where you are coming from.  I look back to my first wireless deployment - a Proxim 2 Mbps FHSS system - and sometimes just sit in awe of how far we have come as an industry.

I know that some schools sell their old wireless equipment on TradeMe when they refresh so it is always a good place to monitor.

I'd be surprised if anybody is selling WSNUP kit yet!

networkn:  ... I have a Uni-Pro ... <snip>

Back to basics ...

Ubiquiti model numbers are very confusing.

Is your Uni-Fi Pro round or square in shape? How old is it? What model is it?

UAP Pro is (and only ever has been) round. The UAP AC was square.

In the original UAP range there was the UAP, UAP-LR, UAP Pro and UAP AC

There is now UAP AC Lite, UAP AC LR, UAP AC Pro, UAP AC EDU and UAP In wall

The UniFis are designed to be ceiling mounted, is that right?  Are the Xclaims also?  The pictures look like they're designed to sit on a shelf.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

UniFis can be wall or ceiling mounted.

I run mine inside a (wooden) cupboard in the centre of the house - this gives me good coverage without having to look at it.

Both can be mounted on a wall or ceiling but how you mount them will depend on where you want coverage - you will need to look at the radiation pattern for both and see how it suits with your environment.

A number of schools didn't get involved with the WSNUP program and a number have already "refreshed" what was installed.  I don't know how well the WSNUP program went down your way but up here a number of schools have been extremely unhappy with it.
