Just to clarify further re the strip board / power board. I plugged the power line adapter into a power board just as an extension to get the power line unit off the wall and it works fine provided the power board does not have any fancy surge protection or filtering.

However if you use it on a power board with other devices connected to the power board like lamps, chargers etc etc I saw performance drop from the 130~200mbps average down to a pretty consistent 35~50mbps.

Designers of those things need a smack in the head. "We will put the pins right in the middle so that you cover up the outlets equally well on both sides. FFFFfffff...

So I'm thinking if you have new wiring, the latest powerlines unit and those speeds, mine being an older house with at best AV500 units not the gigabit ones, I would imagine my speeds would be a lot less. Sighhhhhhhh

doesnt mean anything you could get more as you have less distance or the copper it better quality, its something you wont know unless you try it.

firefuze: I use these: DHP-701AV Get around 130~200mbps from point to point. It fluctuates depending on electrical load around the house at any given time.. and these are suppose to be the latest and greatest! Certainly no where near the '2000mbps' thats advertised (or even possible with Gig devices anyway) Very bulky, takes up two power outlets, will work with a strip board but performance degrades. I'm using from each ends of my house which is a brand new house so perfect wiring too, if you have an older house performance could be degraded.

If you have a brand new house, why does it not have structure cabling?

and just because its new doesnt mean the wiring is perfect, RCD's etc in newer houses can effect power line adapters

I had AV500 D-Link devices prior to my current ones in my old house and would still get 80-100 most of the time which worked flawlessly streaming movies from a NAS. And was over a much greater distance than my current setup too so wouldn't give up hope!

Not sure what you mean by structured cabling? I don't own the house, its a rental so if it was cheaper not to go down that route then I'm sure that would be the case as everything has been done on the cheap in this house!

You just need to try them out.
The new tenda and tplink units are tiny compared to the old D-Link ones.

Dont use a surge protector near them - I find that if you have a flakey connection, using a surge protector near them causes a loss in speed - even if the unit is plugged directly into a wall outlet, and a surge protecting 4-way multiplier is in the adjacent socket.
Generally they like a good clean line.

This customer gets about 30mbits using some 200mbit powerline units between their pump shed by the pool and the kitchen at the far side of the house.

It all depends upon the power line layout - if you have heaps of "taps" then there is signal bounceback which creates noise and lowers the speed. Taps are caused by daisy chaining power plugs, plugging in devices, multipliers etc. Every time the AC line reaches an end point, it bounces back. So in some houses they work really really well, in others it can be hit-and-miss. Some wall outlets perform better than others.

From the kids rumpus room where the router is, this customer gets about 60mbits to the first homeplug in the parents office, and in the lounge at the far end of the house its about 30mbits using 200mbit older D-Link homeplugs.

Still looks too wide for a normal horizontal double outlet or a standard spaced powerstrip.

You shouldnt be using them on a powerstrip / multiplier.
But i can tell ya I do have good results using them with a triangular double plug. The wiring inside those cant get much simpler.

Wonder if someone will start to market a powerline filter that sticks a lot of inductance between the wall and your load to minimize the loading on the high frequancies and the effect that they have on powerline comms. As opposed to the usual noise filters that stick a whole lot of capacitance straight across the power shunting out all the noise.
