Otherwise, cables are so cheap, just go to PB, get some nice new cat-6 ones in the lengths you need and a pretty color, replace them and see what happens.

Certainly for your core routing gear atleast, i would push making sure to have decent cables. Nothing worse than a badly self crimped cable linking the whole network to the router! - had a friend who did this, next time i was round made a point of re-terminating it properly.. he was still just putting up on it rather than replacing it :/

Using colours on key items is also insanely helpful, colour code anything for router, modems and WAPs so you know which all your core gear is at a glance. I would also highly recommend a colour for any POE gear so that you dont mistakenly stick it into places it should not go..

Thank you. Since we moved, I'm not now sure what short cable I used from the port to my wifi router in the living room. Are they labelled 100mbit or Gbit? If so, I can swap that out and see. If I still get 95, then the wall cabling must be 100. House is 5 years old, it was cabled when built. No issue, but would be nice to have 1000 in the walls.

Cat5e cable is rated to 1Gbps speeds. If Cat5e is what is in the wall then it's not the cable itself but the connections that are slowing things up. If any of the connections (wall plate, patch panel etc) have been wired with only two pairs connected then you will only see 100Mbps speeds, (even though the cable itself is capable of 1Gbps)

Check the rating of the cable in the wall (at only 5 years old I'd expect at least Cat5e) and that the connections at the wall plates and patch panel have all four pairs terminated. As above, also check that any patch cables you use between your equipment and the wall plates and patch panel have all four pairs terminated. You should then be getting 1Gbps speeds (for equipment capable of it!)

Think it was the TG582n telecom were putting out, had the Yellowish white 100mbit cable, i actually have one of these between a adsl modem and router for one of the WAN ports.

I use it there knowing its only 100mbit as atleast to my eyes against all the structured cabling next to it, it is Dead obvious.

ill see if i cant pull it out for a few second to grab a photo without people screaming that half their connections have dipped!

i would pick it as one of the patch cables, some isp's only included cat5e cables but they only had some of the pairs connected, meaning they could only do fast ethernet, not 1gbps.

probably also the easiest thing to test

I was about to pull up a photo of the only a few pairs connected cat5 things that come with that modem but.. phone decided its a little too low, it had a bit of a workout on a few drives today so not surprised.

You will have to excuse the poor photo, ill probably repost it in a little while once i actually am charged.

They are very identifiable, i have not come across any ones that are like it.
