I have two computers for my work,
If my laptop supports Ethernet LAN 10/100MBit does that mean if I was to get fibre 20/200 .. 20Mbps Upload 200 mbps Down
would I not be able to run these speeds on my laptop?

The laptop is basic maybe 2 years old,
just easier around the house at times, ok it says...
So if I had Fibre 200/20 I could only run 100/10 through the laptop? would it still work?

If you get a 200/20 plan you will see about 95/20 on the wired ethernet connection, it lists AC wireless which may deliver better results if you were to get a decent router, since even the worst AC will do 433 meg over the air which can easily do 200 in the real world.
Must be a very basic model to only have 100 meg lan on it however, and that means it might not have enough processor to actually transfer that much data. Plenty of people find their low spec laptops etc top out about 50-60 on speedtests and cant do HD skype etc.
I have cable with Vodafone the old Warpspeed plan I get 95 mb download and 10 mb upstream now,?

Well that's a good sign, There is no knowing how much your performance issues are from the connection or from such an underpowered laptop however, best bet would be to take it to a friends place who has fiber on a decent speed plan and see how it goes for you before jumping onto fiber, since the cost of buying a decent router for fiber might be better put towards a faster laptop.

Yes, the 100/10 means it will do 100 and 10 depending what you plug it into, not that it is 100 down 10 up like with internet. Dont see 10 meg networks much thesedays so I dont know why they bother even mentioning it in the specs.
You would be able to get the 20 up, and if you went for a 200 meg plan then you would get 95ish up on that. The problem comes that when you speedtest you are sending and reciving data and doing nothing with it, so it doesnt show that you could achieve those speeds when you are actually using the data it is recieving. 10 meg should give a pretty good skype experiane if it has the whole 10 megs to itself, if you are seeing issues with that then there is a good chance that it is not the internet connection holding it back, but that the computer just cant compress the video at a high enough quality.
That is why I suggest trying the laptop elsewhere to see if you will benifit or not.
Okay, so if i ended up getting the 100 down 20 up fibre It will allow for 20 upload speed, even if it says 100/10 on the laptop specs? and should still do better than the 100 / 10 cable?,
how can my Lan 100/10 .. push through 95 upload if i went on the 200/200 plan if it only says /10?

right, so 100/20 download/upload ...fibre should give me 95/20 and if I went for 200/20 I still would get 95/20, and if I had 200/200 I should get 95/95 with that Laptop,

Yeah the laptop will also have memory and CPU limitations. However the 2 computers could still benefit from faster internet, would be a nice way to spread the speed between the 2 computers if they get used at the same time...

I have patch panel in garage, which feeds 12 ethernet ports in the house, I am on fibre 100/20, I also get 95/20. I put that down to the patch panel and extra connections. I.e. instead of router to wifi router, its router to patch panel connection, metres of ethernet through the walls, then to wifi router. Although thats only one extra physical plug. Possible the effect of the other 3 connected ethernet port just being there. OR, the cabling may be 100mbit. Can 100mbit cable do more than 100 in real life use?

94Mbps is the most you can get over a 100Mbps Fast Ethernet connection. The PHY layer maximum speed doesn't take any L2 or L3 overheads into consideration.

Thank you. Since we moved, I'm not now sure what short cable I used from the port to my wifi router in the living room. Are they labelled 100mbit or Gbit? If so, I can swap that out and see. If I still get 95, then the wall cabling must be 100. House is 5 years old, it was cabled when built. No issue, but would be nice to have 1000 in the walls.
Get photos of the patch panel, close ups of the cable ends etc to see. There are plenty of cables supplied with routers and modems that only have 2 pairs of wire in them which is because the router they came with only needed that since it was adsl and only had 100 meg ports.
Otherwise, cables are so cheap, just go to PB, get some nice new cat-6 ones in the lengths you need and a pretty color, replace them and see what happens.
