Really easy to do - just enable guest access and block access to your subnet in the controller.

Yup and you'll want to set a static IP on the Apple TV and Chromecast and then you can allow guest access to those specific IPs only.

@michaelmurfy Your very generous hosting services have popped up in my searches, and seeing as i've got a Unifi home network upgrade on the way I thought it worth asking a slightly (possibly) silly question...

I understand I need to use a local machine to setup the hardware, and don't need this hardware to even be on continuously, but is your cloud hosting service acting as an alternative to having this machine on all the time to manage the network? Or does it provide some other form of management over and above the locally hosted software?

The hosted instance removes the need for a local server. Will also mean you avoid any of the issues related with controllers popping up on different IP addresses as it is always in the same place.

@Disrespective You don't even need a local machine to set them up - just SSH or use the discovery tool and setinform them to the cloud controller - from here, set up your networks and you're away.

I've done a general cleanup of the controller tonight by removing sites that have not logged in or had any devices added in the last 60 days. This is a general reminder for those who want to adopt their devices to the controller to do so before you're pruned. If you've got an account that has been disabled because of this then PM me and I can re-add you (however again, if your account remains unused with no devices I'll just prune it again). I'm always available over DM if you need assistance with adopting your devices or if you trust me enough I may be nice enough to offer free assistance via Anydesk or Teamviewer.

Furthermore I've upgraded the server to the latest version of the UniFi software (v5.3.8) and all devices adopted to the controller have been successfully updated. All ports apart from port 443 (WebUI via the NGINX reverse proxy) are closed off to NZ IP addresses only as from tonight. I've enabled port 8443 to NZ only with the same Letsencrypt SSL certificate so you're able to login direct from a NZ IP. I've verified that all adopted devices have successfully connected back after this change.

Thanks Michael, really appreciate your assistance late last night getting my AP set up. Will be doing some tinkering/testing over the next few days. One quick question though - if I physically disconnect the AP (i.e. to move it to a different location) do I have to re-adopt it or will the controller remember and re-activate it?

Just FYI Ubiquiti are launching their own cloud controller offering which is scheduled for early 2017. This isn't going to be free however.

@Lizard1977 as long as it is moved within NZ only then nothing is needed from you to re-adopt it, it'll magically reconnect.

@sbiddle I'd still prefer to host it myself only since you have better control of who has your data.

Sure. I did it at around 2am but essentially what happens is I have the certbot script that runs to updates the NGINX SSL certificate which invokes another script to put that same certificate into the Java cert store and restarts the UniFi controller. It was a script I found on Github Gist but was quite easy to get up and running.

thx for setting me up on your cloud controller.

just to get things up and running I used the android app - and it seemed to work well.

I can see the cloud controller would let me:

1. setup a guest network

2. setup a captive portal

3. remotely manage

4. some cool reports

I have an edgerouter which lets me do things like block devices etc so don't need to do that at the ap level.

Also includes traffic reporting (if I turn it on).

What other benefits are there - or is it overkill for me?

I think you will find traffic reports are only if you have ever the Ubiquiti USG. But I think your edgerouter has that same layer 7 dpi functionality built in.

I have just jumped on board, thanks to @michaelmurfy

I've purchased a Unifi Security Gateway and a LR Unifi Access Point.. will add to the network as needed. Retiring the Linksys E3000 which was performing poorly.

Have enabled the new failover feature to use failover between a UFB (BigPipe) and a Cable connection.

(Was away on holiday and had loss of service, which was a PITA as this took my LPFM station off the internet for a few days until manual intervention and a power-cycle resolved. Hopefully this will now be a thing of the past!) :-)

I've successfully completed a roll-out of the latest Ubiquiti UniFi software (5.3.11) - all devices were successfully updated last night. If your device for some reason isn't working give it a reboot and she'll be alright.
