Its a type of cat you can get, Bred to be optimal i suppose.

Ill use the correct brand name: OptiCat 5E
Normal Cat 5E with 2 optical cores in it that are "Chorus approved" <-- you see that, Chorus network approved. Its not like its made to a IEEE standard, Ya know. *sarcasm*

I have seen plenty of fibre run down conduits and in houses disregarded by chorus because it "wasnt upto chorus network standard" what a jackoff.

Opticat 5E is the Hybrid (both copper & fibre) cable 'installed' by the Chorus UFB/NGA install techs between the Chorus external test point to there ONT/ internal copper testpoint. - why only Opticat5E, and not some other generic copper/fibre hybrid (that sparkies have been installing and then on chargeing the builder/developer/houseowner for) because it forms part of the chorus network and is made to the standards required by them for their network.

It is only intended for that purpose and is absolutely useless for running anywhere else inside a house - unless you are going to go to the great expense of creating your own fibre network within your house.

If I won 44 mil I'd rebuild the house, there'd be at least one cat5e jack on every wall (maybe not in the toilet), and I'd see about getting 60Ghz on the roof in every room, and possibly a couple of outdoor points. Also a walk in comms/utility closet - I'd definately consider running at least hdmi & USB cables throughout the house and putting all of the physical computer bits into racks. If I really wanted to spend money I'd consider VGA passthough with dedicated quadro cards for each vm and run all of the house 'computers' off of one hypervisor - just because that would be fun to do. I'd probably end up having to donate time in my house to networking students just to justify the internal network.

Until then though a single pre-built stranded cat5e dangling at each end of the house through holes in the ceiling is about as fancy as my network's going to get. Sigh.

Sounds like my old network at mums house. Ran 35m of cat6 over the roof into my upstairs bedroom, From there ran cat6 straight down the outside wall into the lounge. Had the downstairs office cupboard full of crap. Roku, WD TV, NAS drive, Server to bond my 2 incoming VDSL connections for my Linux ISO collection.

Good times.

I can remember the first time I tried to make my own cables, purchased a crimper, cables etc  went to start and realised my colour deficiency made the task impossible. Oh well that's why we pay folks to do this.

My problem is that the buggers mysteriously re arrange themselves when your about to crimp it!
The first time i crimped my own cables was at Tech, We had a competition on who could make the shortest cable. I had about .5MM between the plastic crimps :) So a total cable length of .5mm.

man I have to say worth every second of pain. wired has absolutely no lag on UFB, zero. every just happens straightaway! with wifi you have to wait after clicking, then it happens very fast , but cable = instant!
