1) Simple.
2) Good.
3) Cheap.
Or buy a Mikrotik and get all 3.

Hah I wouldn't call a Mikrotik all 3 unless if you know how to use Mikrotik products. Just like the Edgerouters IMO.

Well maybe they could just not do that?? Do you know why they feel the need to turn the router off? As it stands, you'll have to plug your router directly into the ONT when they switch theirs off for the night.
Benjour: lxsw,
Yeah. The whole router!
Well that's not really going to fix your issue is it. You're going to need to duplicate those settings and then plug in and unplug your router each time they do this.
It sounds like your problem isn't actually a new router.
Benjour: But I would plug it into the modem?? They are wired and think that the government can steal their dreams through wifi.
What's your connection? If it's UFB you'll need to plug into the ONT.
If you have xDSL and only have a single modem/router you'll also need to buy a new modem.

The government have their own high speed wifi network for dream stealing, they are not reliant on pathetic consumer internet wifi.
Grab a UniFi AP and have 2x SSID's. The first SSID have on a timed basis that turns off automatically each night to give them the impression that it is actually "automated" and a second SSID that you use (and not tell them about).

richms, yes
michaelmurfy, they're not idiots, they can see the lights. thanks though.
It sounds like you're trying to solve a person problem with technology. That never works. If Wi-Fi is the problem, turn off Wi-Fi and leave the router on, then make sure your machine is wired instead.

I dunno, I'd argue that Mikrotik aren't very difficult. For a user that has absolutely zero computing experience, sure, but otherwise it's basically
Plug it in.
Download Winbox.
Click Quickset and input your IPs & enable DHCP
Done.

It's all relative. One could argue Mikrotik is not cheap relative to performance compared to some old x86 hardware lying around + a firewall distro. But the x86+ f/w distro may not be simple, depending on your iptables-foo. The "pick 2" principle is far from perfect, and is readily challenged, but IMHO remains a fun and fair concept.
