I just wanted to say I recently got this router and couldnt get it to work, but its now working after a firmware update.

This thread also covers the issue and it looks like you can get it to work prior to updating the firmware by setting the VLANs to 10 on all LAN ports

The best thing on this router is the constant firmware update, with all security patches coming out fast.

Hey guys, I am considering getting this router but have a need for having a working phone line (VoIP).

What are my options?
Note: Ideally I would use my existing pots phone and plug it somewhere. What do I need for that?

Without knowing who your RSP is and your connection type that question can't really be answered.

If you're going to opt for a RSP that doesn't deliver voice via copper or ONT voice port you'll need to either use the RSP supplied RGW behind your primary router or buy your own ATA and either find a VoIP provider that will support this, or move providers to one who will provide you with config details.

Why would you want to move to the Synology over the Fritz!box you have at present?

If your goal is to improve wireless coverage the ultimate solution is always to move to standalone access points since routers are very rarely ever located in the best position in the home, and more importantly the days where a single router/AP can deliver great performance to an average sized home are long gone since we're in a world where 5GHz is now the norm.

Fair call. A couple of things annoy me at present:

- only 3x usable LAN ports which means I'm currently having to add one extra switch to fit my 4x cabled devices
- Wifi doesn;t seem to have 801.11b which is required by my stupid Fitbit Aria Scale (which means I am using my old router for an extra 801.11b compatible access point and that's ridiculous)
- I guess I like the idea of the Synology device

I'm pretty sure you can just enable 802.11b in the fritz!box. Plenty of routers and APs all disable 802.11b support these days by default since it causes such a huge WiFi performance hit on the network.

I did find the setting and enabled it but somehow that still didn't work and as you say, I wasn't keen on taking a hit on the rest of the network hence why I introduced a new SSID on a different channel (stupid fitbit!)

I use the Synology as router and Fritz!box as WiFi AP only in my 2degrees connection. If you want to do the other way around you can easily use the Fritz as the main router and setup the Synology as a WiFi AP only - it's just a click away. This would get your phone working and extend WiFi.

Check that your Fritz 80211b is set to 20 MHz width.
