You were dead right,very perceptive of you,put the router before the switch everything fixed ,it was never going to work ,you would think an electrician would have the knowledge to do it right,getting it to fit could be a drama but no worries.

Thank you for your time and knowledge,I must say I feel a bit dumb!Helps to get another perspective on things.

Unfortunately not. Most electricians are not well skilled in running data cable, let alone how to configure it once installed. Really need to get a specialist data cable company, or confirm the skillset of the sparky first.

Electricians should stick to power cables., but there are plenty of data cabling guys who don't have much of a clue beyond how to run the cable and terminate it at a patch as well.. For people without the skills to do it themselves I'd get data cablers to do the cable run and that's it, get an IT company for the rest of the setup.

If the data cabling guy isn't up to doing the layer 2 networking stuff (plugging in equipment) then he only needs to call his boss, who will get all embarrassed about sending the guy without basic training. Construction companies don't have that problem, they can just assume the electricians know all about data and nobody asks questions or plans for the amount of equipment that needs to go in the network cabinet.

Normally the router goes in the cabinet and the wifi goes somewhere more central in the house, so you use two devices instead of a single all-in-one type.

Time to find a new industry!
