Just don't do El cheapo PoE adapters. That doesn't look all too safe. Do it right the first time instead 😊

I turned off wifi from my isp modem and bought this..

Yeah, I’ve mentioned earlier that I considered a Unifi AP, but in the end decided against it due the more complex setup in that it needs a server; I know Michael kindly makes one available for people to use, but this is generally more convoluted than I wanted, whereas the Grandstream AP seems to be relatively straightforward given its web-based interface will let me manage multiple devices (if I end up needing two of them). I know there’s a Unifi phone app that means a server isn’t required, but I understand that limits the feature set, plus I assume doesn’t work if trying to manage more than one. If I’m wrong in this understanding i look forward to being put right!

It could well be a single UFO-type AP is enough for the whole section, but if I need to get a second I think the simplicity of approach of the Grandstream will make this the less-risky purchase.

Weirdly, PriceSpy is still reporting the Grandstream at $152 from Go Wireless, whereas it’s website has it at $195 +GST. damn it... https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=4119465

@jonathan18 What do you mean it needs a server to set it up? It should be pretty much plug and play out of the box set it up with the Unifi app and your good to go///

^ He means that it is designed to work with the Unifi Controller, and he doesnt want to go down the controller route, which is fair enough in a domestic setting.

Your saying it doesn't come with a controller? I thought it would just be a web interface like a router...

do some googling as to what the controller does.

he provides a cloud controller for it so you can manage your devices via his cloud controller meaning you dont need a controller (computer or otherwise yourself.

you can run the controller yourself, set the devices up then just close it down if you dont want monitoring etc.

Instead of having to run my own server to manage my APs, if I purchased the Unifi products, I could use the one that Michael runs (ie, it sits on one of his own computers, accessible to those he grants such access). A great benefit to those who don’t want to set up a computer just to do this (though I understand it can be run off a Pi, but I just can’t be bothered fluffing about with this or meeting the extra expense).

So what your saying is Michael will have full access to stuff we do on the net etc?

If Michael has a power cut anyone that has a AP setup though his cloud controller will stop working?

Onto more pragmatic things: where is the likely best spot to install?

I’ve ordered the Grandstream AP, and am already thinking that a more judicious placement of this would make it far more likely to be adequate for the whole house and external HT.

Here’s a diagram of our house (ignore the central heating info):

The router sits in room 1, with the current second AP sitting in the lounge (on the internal wall near the aircon intake vent), connected by Ethernet going under the house. So under current arrangements that’s also where the new AP would sit.

But we also have an external sleepout building behind the house (to the left of room one), so I’m thinking if I placed the AP on the ceiling of the hallway, between the left aircon intake vent and the in-ceiling unit, It would be pretty much central to the residential parts of the section.

Does this sound about right?

And are there any tips to getting an Ethernet cable up into the ceiling through the walls of a 1920s house? I’m not much of a home handyman, so would I need to look to getting an electrician?

The lower price is for trade plus gst , whereas the higher one is the public plus gst.

Just open an account with Go Wireless and then you can get it at trade. They are really good to deal with.

Having just installed a 7610 a few months ago, I have found it to be easy to setup and problem-free. Four days ago I replaced the Spark HG659B with the GWN7000 and the combo is great with all setup and control for both the router and the AP available from one interface. (Thank you michaelmurfy for router guide info.)

Bad timing! I've ordered it already (from Ascent), but if I give up on the Huawei or end up needing another AP, I'll know what to do next time, so thanks for the heads-up.
